Avast! 6.0.1367 reports 93,038 new virus definitions

This is an extraordinarily high number! VPS is 120209-3.

Have not been on the 'net for a day or so.

New cloud updating for Avast! 7 and 6 at work here?

The number itself is not so relevant. Once in a while, the definitions are “cleaned up” and the numbers varies, depending on how the definitions would identify a complete family of malware.

The updates can be seen at http://www.avast.com/virus-update-history

Thanks for the link. What I saw was the window that comes after in the browser when I click the popup window re the most recent update. I also see in the update link that the two previous updates were fixes and false positive removals, so in essence, there were four updates released yesterday that included the final 0120209-3 vps.

Just curious as to the inner workings of Avast! is all.

Just wondering, as I see elsewhere in the forum, Avast! 7 beta seems to have gotten the ability to receive pushed updates from Avast! servers, but that is not fully deployed yet. Is this what I am seeing? Is it relevant for Avast! 6?

No, I don’t think the streaming update has much to do with the number of malware detected, which is anyway a value that is not comparable against other security tools. Nowadays, each program counts this value using different methods.

About avast 6, the streaming updates are not part of it. This is a new method of distributing updates for avast 7. But this is not a problem. The “traditional” methods of distribution are still there for both, avast 6 and 7.

Then what does the streaming updates provide?signatures for new viruses or varients of a particular virus?

As i see they are super tiny and super fast…

P.S. i am not hijacking this thread just curious about my answer.

Nice to know. Thanks.

As soon as Avast! 7 is an oem release, I will install it. Impressed.

Streaming updates is just a way to distribute the updates faster to the users, instead of updating just a couple of times per day (or 4 times). The total number of viruses’ protections added between one “traditional” update and the next one is not affected.

Say you have one pizza. You can have some slices now and after 4 hours the rest. Or you can eat them all together. At the end of the day, you ate the same one pizza.

Good to know…thanks!!
