avast 7 blocking itunes / home sharing

I’ve just upgraded to a new windows 8 machine. Previously I was using AVG on an XP machine and had to tweek some settings for it to allow itunes on my computer to connect properly with my apple TV. This was working fine with my new machine until I installed avast. Strangely, it works intermittently, though almost always I have to disable avast in order for it to work.

I’ve tried disabling each element of the real-time shields but can’t seem to identify what is causing the issue. And I cannot see how to “open” ports that itunes/apple require to be open.

Anyone have any advice? I’ve tried searching for a couple days for answers but have come up empty handed.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Have you disabled Windows Defender?

  • Which Win8? (32/64 Bit - which SP)
  • Which avast-version? (Free, Pro, Internet Security)
  • Which program version (7.0.1474 is the latest)?
  • Other security related software installed?

Thanks for that - didn’t realize you’d responded…

I’m running Windows 8, version 6.2 (build 9200), 64bit.

Windows defender is not running.

I’m using avast free, and have the latest version / updates.

I have installed no other security software.

As I said, things seemed to be working fine until I installed the antivirus, and it appears that when I disable it things work as normal. Thus, it would seem that this is the culprit. I did check windows firewall, but the settings seem to be fine.

Thanks,

Jon

Was AVG also installed on your Win8? If yes, have you used the removal tool for AVG to remove all leftovers? Here’s the link: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

I got iTune app download problem too on my Win8(64bits). iTune 11 giving weird connection errors while I proceed to download after purchase. Once I disable AVAST, I am able to resume my download.

I tried exclusion but Apple folders/files are all over the places.
