Avast 7 not working after installation

Hi, I’ve recently installed Avast 7 into my friend’s new laptop. It had McAfee before that. And so I had to uninstall it using McAfee’s uninstaller. After that, I proceeded to install Avast. But after installation, I noticed it wasn’t running. I clicked on the fix button but nothing happens. I have a feeling McAfee wasn’t fully uninstalled. Here are the specs:

OS: Windows 7
Processor: Intel i5 2430
Memory: 4 Gig DDR3 1333
Storage: 500G 1066

McAfee is a right beast to get rid of - did you use the uninstall utility ?

If after following essexboy’s suggestion you still have a problem with avast!, you may have to do the following:
Installing avast! from scratch

Yes, I used McAfee’s uninstall utility tool before installing avast. I’ve tried hitting the fix now button too. But all it does is nothing. Then, I tried uninstalling avast with the avast uninstall utility and reinstalled it again. And still, it doesn’t run. This McAfee crap is worse than a virus!

Sorry, but you’ve hardly had time to do everything as outlined.
Getting into safe mode alone takes longer. :frowning:

Because I’ve already done it even before I first went to post on here.

Does not matter. Do it again. Follow this instructions:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

Good luck.

I’ve tried that several times. Right now, I’m able to update avast through control panel, but it still doesn’t wanna start even if I force start it through services.

The follow the instructions for a clean install and don’t forget to reboot between each step.

Then follow Bob3160 advice.

Install Avast! from scratch:

Download and save to your desktop aswclear : http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Download and save a fresh copy of Avast!. Be sure to have your lincense handy if running a paid version:

http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe

Use aswclear.exe in safe mode for any Avast! you may have had before and then last for v. 7. Reboot after each uninstall.

Reinstall fresh copy of Avast! and reboot.

I would also advise you to run a manual search for leftovers of McAfee, type McAfee into the run bar and click see more results then click computer, that should bring up some leftovers in system32 and program data.
If your confident in the registry ( if not dont attempt ) then you can also search there too as there would be lots of McAfee junk still residing in there as well.

I’ve succesfully uninstalled McAfee on the computer and everything seems to be ok. However, when I check on Avast it’s modules are not running. Even if it says everything is protected. When I check on the shields, none of them are running and when I try to run them it says “Unable to start the ! Shield unreachable” I’ve installed it on a Windows 7 Enterprise Edition. I don’t know if it has anything to do with that but this is the first time I’ve encountered a problem like this.

Repair avast!:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → avast!
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Did that. The odd thing is is that even though it says the shields are not running, it says everything is protected. Also, the orange globe thing spins once in a while.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??

A screenshot might help.

Avast Free 7.0.1426
Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 32-bit
Nothing Installed Except for Avast

I don’t know how to post screenshots but I’ve attached the pictures.

Well, this will work as well. ;D
According to your screenshot avast! doesn’t do/scan anything.

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.
