Just reading this again https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.0.
It is called (Quote: )
“However, please note that all Windows XP and Vista users will continue to receive virus definitions updates from the Avast Threat Labs database after this date and Avast/AVG Antivirus versions 18 and older will continue to work as usual providing full protection”,
but the downloads (the installers) list it is named ´iavs9x´ …
No, I don’t believe it is (that is the just location on the Avast server hxxps://install.avcdn.net/iavs9x-xp/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe), the last supported version for XP was/is 18.8.
If you wan to test this, the off-line installation file, don’t run it, right click on the file and check the properties and you can see for yourself (or hover the mouse pointer over it).
So if they have Win XP and the version isn’t 18.8 there is no VPS support for that Avast Version. Given that support for Avast 8, 9 and 10 has been terminated.
If you had Avast 18.8 then " [EOL] Virus definition updates for Avast version 9/10/11 end in summer 2023" wouldn’t impact you.
OK. I now have two virus definitons update-files, 125 and 223 MB.
When this does not help,
I will have to check the 18.8 version, whether it does let me the same speed of XP, as now, with the V8.0.1489 possible.
Thank You all, this compagnon support.
(These weeks I tested for Win10 the newest Avast. This was very slowing everything, despite Win Defender de-activated. But Win 10 already, to me: pooh …, sorry. Just once saying, please.)
I have no idea what it is you are doing or have tried, without this kind of information it is hard to pin down your problem, as I haven’t experienced any of these issues.
Other than updating to at least 18.8 (which you are reluctant to do) or somehow finding a source for an earlier version Avast 12 that still has VPS support.
The fact that it is saying it is expired, I don’t believe that stops the VPS updates. A very long time ago if you continued past the expiry date (don’t know by how much) it auto updated the registration.
The question I would ask is why you go past the free registration period (unless you are testing something), it’s free after all ?
I renew when it first mentions expiry/renew in X days.
If you mean you lost the text that you had compiled when you tried to post ?
Then I would advise copy and past your text (if you are taking a long time compiling it), before posting it. As it would appear that there is some sort of refresh if there is a long delay, this results in clearing what you entered and an empty post.
This has caught me out on a number of occasions, now If it has taken time to research and post an answer, before doing so I copy my text first.
Copy - to have it at least in the clipboard - I sometimes think of it and do it, yes, sometimes not.
It happens so fast, that one copies just an other text, and to copy again the whole text is just a boring work.
I did already see 2 solutions to this:
either saving - as the web-site - as a text-editor automatically saving in a determined time as backup, or save it an other way (also the web-site), and when going back - ´go back one page´ - to the edit-site and has the text there still available.
To use basically the preview could perhaps be a solution to avoid empty posting.
For me, if I have spent some time compiling a long reply, I use two keystrokes when the cursor in in the input area Ctrl+A ‘select all’ and Ctrl+C and copy before I press either Preview or Post.
So if I end up with a blank input window/preview pane, I use the Ctrl+V paste shortcut.
Doesn’t always work, going back a page can back to a blank input field as it is time expired.
