Avast 8.0.1489 (XP) Definitions list download stops at File saving

You would need to continue the search for old versions, that was just one I found that supposedly had Avast 12.

It is never going to be easy to find such old versions (Avast 12 is from 7 years ago).

Just reading this again https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.0.
It is called (Quote: )
“However, please note that all Windows XP and Vista users will continue to receive virus definitions updates from the Avast Threat Labs database after this date and Avast/AVG Antivirus versions 18 and older will continue to work as usual providing full protection”,

but the downloads (the installers) list it is named ´iavs9x´ …

So this is the 9x version ?

No, I don’t believe it is (that is the just location on the Avast server hxxps://install.avcdn.net/iavs9x-xp/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe), the last supported version for XP was/is 18.8.
If you wan to test this, the off-line installation file, don’t run it, right click on the file and check the properties and you can see for yourself (or hover the mouse pointer over it).

So if they have Win XP and the version isn’t 18.8 there is no VPS support for that Avast Version. Given that support for Avast 8, 9 and 10 has been terminated.

If you had Avast 18.8 then " [EOL] Virus definition updates for Avast version 9/10/11 end in summer 2023" wouldn’t impact you.

“check the properties”.
Ah, OK, thank You.

OK. I now have two virus definitons update-files, 125 and 223 MB.
When this does not help,
I will have to check the 18.8 version, whether it does let me the same speed of XP, as now, with the V8.0.1489 possible.

Thank You all, this compagnon support.

(These weeks I tested for Win10 the newest Avast. This was very slowing everything, despite Win Defender de-activated. But Win 10 already, to me: pooh …, sorry. Just once saying, please.)

You’re welcome.

This is what I got.

This does not appear as a VPS-update:
File version 4.8.0.0,
but in Element name ist 6, 0, 0, 0
and Description is: AVAST Software Setup Engine

It does for me. I have no idea what it is that you are trying to do.

But clicking the link starts a download and it will be run when complete.
Something that I with a fully up to date version I don’t want to happen.

What happens if you start with this link https://www.avast.com/download-thank-you.php?product=VPS5&locale=en#pc ?

I have no idea what it is you are doing or have tried, without this kind of information it is hard to pin down your problem, as I haven’t experienced any of these issues.

“But clicking the link starts a download and it will be run when complete.”:
Such automatic - run - I do avoid, does not happen to me.

This version vpsupd.exe confuses me, more than once:
It has a size of 223 MB in compare with the version for 9x, 125 MB.

Here a pic of the properties, where 2 different file-version numbers are presented.

It looks like you have got the off-line ‘Program Update’ rather than the off-line VPS Update.

What is the Product Version indicate ?

Yes.
“version indicate”: I don´t know.
It is from the direct link from here this comment https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=325476.msg1712715#msg1712715

I’m completely out of ideas.

Other than updating to at least 18.8 (which you are reluctant to do) or somehow finding a source for an earlier version Avast 12 that still has VPS support.

FWIW. I am still getting automatic virus definition updates OK on v18. Just the “Free” licence is indicated as expired.

I thought you were on V23 based on your comments in the 23.12 Thread yesterday? Or was that just you confirming the ending digits on the build number?

The fact that it is saying it is expired, I don’t believe that stops the VPS updates. A very long time ago if you continued past the expiry date (don’t know by how much) it auto updated the registration.

The question I would ask is why you go past the free registration period (unless you are testing something), it’s free after all ?
I renew when it first mentions expiry/renew in X days.

No ‘rocksteady’ has been a long term XP user and 18.8 is the last supported version of Avast for XP.

No, all my lots effort text gone, after posting … wouh. No.

If you mean you lost the text that you had compiled when you tried to post ?
Then I would advise copy and past your text (if you are taking a long time compiling it), before posting it. As it would appear that there is some sort of refresh if there is a long delay, this results in clearing what you entered and an empty post.
This has caught me out on a number of occasions, now If it has taken time to research and post an answer, before doing so I copy my text first.

Yes.

Copy - to have it at least in the clipboard - I sometimes think of it and do it, yes, sometimes not.
It happens so fast, that one copies just an other text, and to copy again the whole text is just a boring work.
I did already see 2 solutions to this:
either saving - as the web-site - as a text-editor automatically saving in a determined time as backup, or save it an other way (also the web-site), and when going back - ´go back one page´ - to the edit-site and has the text there still available.

To use basically the preview could perhaps be a solution to avoid empty posting.

  1. For me, if I have spent some time compiling a long reply, I use two keystrokes when the cursor in in the input area Ctrl+A ‘select all’ and Ctrl+C and copy before I press either Preview or Post.
So if I end up with a blank input window/preview pane, I use the Ctrl+V paste shortcut.

  2. Doesn’t always work, going back a page can back to a blank input field as it is time expired.
