avast!8 causing extreem performance issues in xp pro

I am a computer tech, I have multiple xp pro machines with matching issues , it started with avast 7, but now after upgrade to avast 8 I have had even worse performance issues not solved by clean install (last ditch effort) system runs great untill I add avast, then it causes tons of hard drive activity and lags all browsers. (ie8 and firefox, both current versions) again this is a clean fresh install, done right - win xp sp3. I have always recommended avast to all my clients but with this new issue I am concerned that I might have to start beta testing a new antivirus to recommend :frowning: is there some secret setting I am not aware of to corrrect this problem? it happens on all my xp pro systems, from 3.33ghz celeron d w/ 500gb ram & 500gb hdd to intel quad core extreem with 2gb ram, 1gb graphics card and 2tb hdd…? is this a lack of support for xp? I refuse to upgrade to a new os till they are completely stable (which will take a while). is there a specific update for xp that causes this conflic? I have noticed that .net framework makes things much worse… did not install .net this time but still problems.

browser extensions are adobe flash & reader and java only + avast web rep, all current versions

Certainly not, no problems here at all.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…??
  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Gone back to V7 as V8 is causing issues with me as i had BSOD 0X000000D1 ERROR ON VERSION 8 on windows xp.

Did have bad slowness even on a new install of win xp sp3 and similar configuration to yours on internet browsing and lockups.
You can get V7 from oldapps.com.

There seems to be alot of problems with win xp as avast is going towards the latest operating systems to run better on them!!!. I like xp although i have a vintage computer!
Even on a old version of avast the virus database will always update and work to protect your computer.

No performance issues here with avast 8 free (or avast 7) and XP Pro SP3.

You can see my system specs in my signature, nothing special.

avast 8 free edition 8.0.1483, no other security software to conflict with avast, even windows explorer lags… machine I am currently working on only has 500 ram, increased paging file but still no luck… even takes 30 seconds for keyboard to let me type on web pages, I am a poor peoples tech and ram upgrades are in there future but was hopeing for a quick fix to get them by till then. I have been using and recommending avast for the past 6 yrs so no prior antivirus. turned off unnessisary shields but still problems, esp with facebook or any other java/flash intensive pages

I pre install avast on all pc’s a build or service, I love the program but hate that its bogging down the poor folks

See if that helps:

  1. avast! GUI → Settings → Troubleshooting → Enable: “Load avast! services only after other system services”
  2. Click OK.
  3. Reboot.

still lags and random lockups :frowning: only happens when avast shileds are doing thier job, if nothing to scan/monitor system runs great. has iexplorer using over 100,000mb of ram in task manager, had fire fox using over 250,000

I’ve found that 512MB RAM in XP and antivirus is not enough. Too much disk activity caused by excessive paging .
Perhaps upgrade to 1GB?

Thats nice… thanks for posting your problem, i’ve got it too!!! ???
My whole computer laggs, nothing work than disable updates of the programm avast and the virus definitions updates! Nothing else make trouble its just avast!!! Nothing to say, must look good but dont work since a few days how it should…
In my logic world it should work and look like it look, and should be fast as it can be! (without any style everything is faster… but hey its funny to fix stupid programm updates up… )
So if you turned off the both parts of avast restart if the computer still lagg!!!
Then download the last version of avast from Chip(cleanest site i ever seen…) → http://www.chip.de/downloads/avast-Free-Antivirus_13010163.html
Then download the last “offline” update for Virus Definition from avast(thx for linking Asyn) → http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/vpsupd.exe

And you dont need to uninstall, just install over the existing avast…

And now install both and restart again! Now you should have your old performance back…
Hope it helps out! ;D

And by the way… dont talk to much trash davexnet!
I’m on a sdram 1gb celeron with settings on performance in winXP and it works great with all i want. And yeah, without media player and without messenger of windows and so on. Just on free open source programms while they are stable and gives performance to the computer!
So help guys out or stfu! :o
