On Windows 8 using Avast 8. Avast regularly generates enormous log files(which I manually deleted), all of them added up to 7Gbs of space.
This has occurred from the start with Avast 8. The log file settings are set to delete after 2 days, yet AVAST does not seem to be respecting those settings.
These are avast dump files indicating problems have occurred in avast, so they will be quite large as they are to help in debugging the problem. It isn’t usual to get masses of these.
I rarely if ever get these.
How long have you had avast 8 installed ?
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What other security software do you have installed, e.g. firewall, anti-spyware, etc. ?
I did a clean install when Win8 came out. Installed Avast 7, found Avast did not play well with Win8 (like many others). Uninstalled Avast and then used Avast cleaner/special uninstaller(twice for good measure :P). Waited for Avast 8, installed it.
Nope my system is high end and super stable. In fact the only other issues I currently have are times when AVAST does not play nice with CHROME(which seems to happen to everyone).
Not just that thread, during my quick googling I noticed others mention this same issue elsewhere.
My friend actually mentioned AVAST was eating HD space (He has a smaller SSD and a totally different build than me). That was actually the impetus for me to make this post, even though I had been experiencing the issue and taken measure (like resetting AVAST, didn’t fix it).
My original game plan was to see if the next release(the version currently in beta) of AVAST fixed it.
Which folder?
Like David said, it would be better solving the issue. But, if it was a temporary problem already solved, we can guide you to delete temporary files.
It isn’t a temporary problem, I was experiencing it since I started using AVAST8 on WIN8. I have been mitigating it by deleting the temp files. I tried resetting AVAST etc to no avail.
Had a friend mention he was having a similar issue.
I googled it and noticed other threads mention the same issue.
The folder is “C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log”
Nope nothing crashing and no error logs in the management panel.
Fresh install using the avast cleaner is my next step if updating to the new version of AVAST doesn’t help. Avast should really cap the size of the log files or delete that type of dump log file. Further searching has turned up other threads in the past about this. Who knows how many people have had this happen. Many won’t notice a gig or so missing.
