Avast Abruptly Stops Scanning

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and/or knew what causes it and what to do about it.

Ever so often, when I attempt to scan my computer, Avast would begin to scan for a few seconds then abruptly stop. During that time, my pc seems slower than normal. This condition could last for several hours before my PC behaves normally again. Afterwards, I am able to run a full scan and Avast says that no threats were detected. I have also scanned with Malwarebytes and it also finds nothing wrong.

It is particularly annoying because I can’t seem to discover a cause for this. At first, I thought it might have something to do with Windows Update because there were times when Windows was updating my computer around the time this problem happened. But I am not so sure because there were times when my system was exhibiting this abnormal behavior and Windows didn’t appear to be updating.

I checked and verified that Avast and Windows were updated. This problem has been nagging me for several months now and I would greatly appreciate if anyone could offer any suggestions or advice. Thank you.

Here is a summary of my system:

Windows 8.1 Pro 32bit
Intel Core 2 Duo
4gig ram

Repair Avast:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Thanks for the reply. Did you ever hear of this problem before? I looked on the internet and couldn’t find any reference to anything similar.

Maybe just a glitch, did the repair help…?

I can’t say. This problem happens every so often. I might have to wait and hope that it doesn’t happen again.

Just wondering…did you ever hear of a virus or malware doing this?

Is the problem back…?

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
