Avast account shows a red segment and CPU maxes out

H,

When I log into my Avast Account I see that the Home Security Network segment is red. With mouse over it suggests an upgrade that sends me to a CNET page for a download of Avast Internet Security 2015. Am a little puzzled by this as I have a licence for Avast Premier that is up to date.

In addition to this the Avast antivirus service has on three occasions run the CPU at max (95 - 100%) on my Surface Pro 3. I have to disconnect from the Internet and turn it off briefly with Task Manager to control it. I have concerns that there is infection with Torpig - see my other post in ‘report virus stuff’.

Am hoping to get a solution , thanks.

Have you done/tried as I suggested to yuena91 ?

First update to the latest version and see if that solved the problem:

If not:

  • Boot the system and wait e.g. 30 minutes.
  • Do nothing on the system in that time, just let it boot/run
  • Is the cpu usage normal after this time ?

If so:

  • Boot the system
  • Open as soon as you can taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del) and check if there is a instance of svchost using a lot of cpu time
  • If it is, check what process it is hosting.
  • If it is dnsrslvr, shutdown that instance of svchost.
  • cpu usage should be going back to normal

Today , First time this happened. Free antivirus, everything up to date. Win 7 system with Avast for at least 4 years. CPU got pegged at 99 %. I Killed all other apps but not processes. Could not shut down any shields. Went down to 77% after that but stayed at a high CPU rate. Had to reboot system and now stable for a bit.
