Avast and itunes conflict

I am presently running the avast Pro Suite trying to decide if I should keep it, or go back to the free protection. Recently Ive sen some huge problems with itunes and window’s update that seems to stem from avast. The update seems to have cured itself after I was finally able to update my software. Now if i try to do anything other than play music in itunes the program freezes and I have to do use task manager to get going again. If I disable the avast it works fine. There must be a conflict in a setting somewhere. I’ll keep the pro suite if I can solve this otherwise its back to another virus protection suite.

Help!
itunes 10.5.1 up to date 1/2/12
avast most current

I honestly think this isn’t a difference between avast free and pro (that switching back might resolve), as essentially the elements likely to interface with them are the same.

By disabling avast, you don’t get any closer to finding which shield is in conflict (if it is conflict).
What error messages or symptoms are you getting and when for A) iTunes and B) Windows Update ?

  1. I would suggest for iTunes testing (I guess when you are downloading, etc.) to disable the web shield as that scans http traffic. If that resolves it then enable it again and open the avastUI, Real-Time Shields, Web Shield, Expert Settings, and check the ‘Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only,’ option.

  2. For windows update, if it has resolved itself it would be kind of hard to find the cause.

Since you mentioned several updates, in addition to what DavidR suggested, please delete the relevant firewall rules for web browsers, for avast and for itunes. Then reboot and let the firewall rules to be created again (“learning mode” or equivalent). Whether the firewall is disabled or enabled, doesn’t matter; the suggestion is valid anyway.
