Upload to avast with a FP notice. Magic Jack has not known to be malware, see: http://askbobrankin.com/magic_jack_good_or_evil.html

I believe bob3160 uses magic jack with avast and no problems, he isn’t on-line right now. Hopefully he will see the topic’s subject and give some feedback.

There is little point in uploading it as a false positive (FP) unless avast is actually alerting on one of its files, which you haven’t mentioned.

You could try this in the meantime and see if that resolves the problem:
AvastUI > Security > Antivirus > Web Shield > Settings and check the ‘Scan traffic from well known browser processes only’ option, see image, click to expand.

Which Magic Jack are you using ???
Direct connect (Doesn’t need the computer) or, the old one which is plugged into the computer.
Make sure you have the latest drivers installed.
Make sure that the firewall allows the port that MJ uses.
I’ve been using the Magic Jack Plus version for over a year as my home phone provider without any problems.
I also use the free version of avast! so there isn’t any avast! firewall interaction.
The following may be of help to you:

Thanks for joining the topic Bob.

Since I’m currently in California, this is all from memory.

Yes, the main thing is that as far as I remembered you didn’t have to make any adjustments in avast for it to work.

From what I’ve seen in my usage of magic jack, it only uses the UDP protocol. Does Avast even scan udp? :-\

Why would anyone want to use this?

Are you using it ???
I have for about 5 years. The last 2 years I’ve used their new version.
It’s saved many a lot of money. I pay 29.95 per year for my phone service
which includes porting my original phone number and haven’t had
one bit of trouble. (how much are you paying ???)
Unless you actually use a product, please don’t post someone elses “review”.
We all know that you can’t satisfy 100% of your customers.
We also know that not all customers follow directions.

No, I don’t use it. I don’t know how much I pay because we have the Xfinity triple bundle which includes phone, tv and internet.

Pardon me for posting on this thread!

Maybe it’s something worth finding out.
Nothing wrong in posting in this thread provide it’s something helpful.

Bob, I have a question for you. If Magic Jack doesn’t have to be connected to a computer, how does it work? Thanks

It’s called VOIP (Voice Over Internet Provider) Basically the same a Vonage

We have a base the answering machine plugged into my router and have 3 handsets. How many phones can you use with Magic Jack? Do you get call waiting, 3 way calling and call forwarding? If so, I wouldn’t mind trying it. $29.95 for a years service is I’m sure a whole lot less than we pay a month.

A simple Google search found this http://www.magicjack.com/plus-v05/

Thank you for the link. Might try it for awhile. We have 2 phone lines, one is for our home phone and the other is my husbands business phone. We pay more for the second phone line a month than Magic Jack charges for a year.

Here’s some more information on Magicjack.

Lawsuits

In March 2009, MagicJack took legal action for defamation against Boing Boing over its assessment of MagicJack’s terms of service,[10] which included assertions that the MagicJack End User License Agreement (EULA) allows the company to “snoop” on users by analyzing their calls for the purpose of targeting advertising and that the EULA requires users to waive the right to sue in court.[11] MagicJack’s suit was determined to be a strategic lawsuit against public participation and dismissed. MagicJack was also ordered to pay Boing Boing’s legal expenses of $50,000 US.[10]

Strategic lawsuit against public participation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) is a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate, and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition.[1]

The typical SLAPP plaintiff does not normally expect to win the lawsuit. The plaintiff’s goals are accomplished if the defendant succumbs to fear, intimidation, mounting legal costs or simple exhaustion and abandons the criticism.

I’ve talked to several people about Magic Jack and each person told me that the person who receives the calls has to pay.

More information from a Naysayer who doesn’t even use the product.
Get off your security infringement kick.
You share no more using MagicJack than you do when you use any other phone service.
All of them have to comply with subpoenas.

@-midnight,
I have 5 phones hooked up to my MagicJack Plus and all of them have good voice quality and all the features you asked about.
The answering service feature only works on the main phone on the system I’m using but, that’s a phone hardware restriction.
