A while ago i posted about a problem i had with my email client , my dsl gateway and avast home edition.Basically when i was on dial up everything worked correctly. When i changed to broadband via a dsl gateway , i could not send any attachments with pimmy (my default email client) ,though i could send and recieve mail.I get a starnge "354 error on a line by itself"This happens even if i dont use the email scanner. It does seem to be a conflict between pimmy and avast and or the dsl gateway,as it works ok with avast uninstalled.Im trialing AVG at the moment and its email scanner works fine.It also changed pop and smtp servers to 127.0.0.1 but unlike avast routes through ports other than 110 and 25.I dont really want to use AVG as i personally think avast is much better.I also dont want to use any other mail client as it works with other avs ive tested. So my question is…
Is there anyone here at the forums that succesfully is able to use avast, broadband and pimmy email client?
I don’t think that it will happen… only if you manually change than at avast4.ini file.
Do you have any spam killer application?
Do you use a proxy filter? (probably not…)
Anyway, next version of avast will have a different email scanning technology… just wait until the end of September 8)
I don’t think that the new avast! will have a different e-mail scanner. I believe Vlk said that “it may happen in the future”… but I’m afraid it doesn’t mean it’ll happen right now.
Thanks for replies. The problem is there even when im not using the email scanner , so im hoping theres a user here at the forums that uses pimmy with avast succesfully, and maybe i can work out what the problem is.Im using 98se, but my gf uses xp with pimmy and the same dsl gateway and avast ,and has the same email problems.

Can a tweak on avast4.ini file help?
See ‘Settings’ on my signature (section [MailScanner])
Thank you technical for reply…
Pimmy authors have very kindly worked with me to try and resolve the problem but we havent been able to work out the problem.Basically i cant send attachments with pimmy my dsl gateway (broadband) and avast installed. It works ok with all 3 when i revert to dial up (with the same isp).A packet sniffer shows its sending the attachment then i get this error…
RCPT TO:<@*.uk>
250 Accepted
DATA
354 Enter message, ending with “.” on a line by itself
and the sending hangs.Outlook express works sending attachments with avast installed as long as i dont use the mail scanner. With AVG installed (using the universal email plugin) everything works correctly.AVG does use different port numbers other than 110 and 25 though to scan mail but does use the localhost settings for servers…Im starting to wonder whether the probem lies with the normal port settings of 110 and 25 and the router and avast. Is it possible to change the mail port settings for avast to a different port and still have avast scan them ?

Sure 8) Just change both your email program and avast4.ini file (see details on my previous post)
