Avast and Sygate

Hye everybody, im new to the forums

i just recently installed avast home edition. in sygate main window there is a lot more programs than AVG had, so im wondering what programs shud i allow and block? ex. ashServ.exe or ashDisp.exe?

i would really appreciate some replies

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

Welcome to avast forums

avast Home has 7 providers (programs as you called them) of these 6 may be running. You need only have the ones that you absolutely need running, Outlook/Exchange is only required if you have MS Outlook (not express) as your email. The internet Mail provider is for other pop3 email clients and is required. The Web Shield, Network Shield and Standard Shield are required. The P2P Shield and Instant Messaging are only required if you use these types of program, otherwise you can terminate them.

I suggest a browse of the avast help file to get to know avast and get the best from it.

wow thx for the replies guys

i really appreciate u responding

hehe… i need a lil more help ::slight_smile:
what is ashDisp.exe? it asked for interent access

and also shud i add the update executable to the startup programs for automatic updates? cuz when i turn on my computer i dont see any update messages

thx again! ;D

It is the avast ’ a icon on the system tray, it lets you know that things are being scanned by rotating, it acts as an interface to the resident on-access providers and the right click menu options. It shouldn’t require internet access so it shouldn’t have asked.

You don’t need to add the automatic updates to the startup programs (it’s automatic ;D). It check to see if you have an internet connection, if you have it will check for updates, if none are available you won’t be troubled. There is no set update period, usually VPS updates average 4 per week. I have had 4 in a day in the past, so provided you have the Update (Basic) set to Automatic it should check for updates every time you connect and every 4 hours after that if you remain connected.

All of this is in the avast help file, Settings, Update (Basic) and Update (Connections)
