Just installed the latest Free Avast and updated the VPS but now I can not connect via Ultra VNC nor through MS Remote Desktop. I have added the ultra vnc folder and corresponding .exe to the Standard Shield but I still get connection failures. I need to have this and have not had any issues when I used AVG so i am not sure what I need to do…
Check if into your firewall settings, the avast components are allowed to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
First, just a comment that avast is not a firewall, it does nothing to prevent connections from being made.
It is possible that I have misunderstood your configuration - if so then please advise.
I have just downloaded and installed Ultra VNC on two machines (both WinXP SP2). Both machines are also using the current release of avast and up to date with the latest VPS signature file.
Both machines are behind a Linksys WRT54GL router (wired).
The machine I have chosen to designate as viewer is using the Windows XP firewall. The machine I have chosen to designate as server is using the free version of the ZoneAlarm firewall. During installation of Ultra VNC the firewalls in both systems requested permissions for Ultra VNC to have access permission.
I have no problems in connecting from this machine (viewer) to the other machine (server) at will and taking control of the server machine. I have made (and needed no) changes to avast, nor has avast provided any alerts.
Since both machines are behind the router there have been no issues with it.
As to Windows Remote Desktop - although I have not tested with it in the last couple of weeks I have tested it with one of the folks I support in the past month (we both use avast). When speaking with that person this evening he mentioned that he had used Remote Desktop today (from the US to the UK) where both machines were on the current release of avast.
Are there any error messages you are seeing that seem to implicate avast?
