avast and windows defender?

Is it ok to run windows defender with avast free?

Yes they can be run windows defender (WD) and avast! together, personally I don’t see what WD brings to the party as avast has anti-spyware incorporated into the avast program.

It also defends on your Operating System ?

windows 7 home edition x64 sp1

Defender is slightly better on the latter windows versions but like DavidR i agree that it brings nothing to the party when you already have avast, if you wish to beef up your security you can add malwarebytes for a weekly scan or even buy the lifetime pro version for realtime protection.

Agree with craig. But anyway me i alway let it on its just use minimal ressource so i dont care of the ressource its use. As craig said you better get malwarebytes too so your protection will be like (avast!, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, Windows Firewall or others) that a great combo i also use ABP for Firefox with the WebRep component of avast! if this give you any solution for your security setup then here you got.

Then your stuck with it, as in you can’t uninstall it, only disable it. This is what I hated on my win7 netbook, I didn’t want it installed and there is no way to completely remove it, only disable it.

Hi,

there is an interesting thread about it on the technet forums, where one answer states that it should be possible to remove it: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistasecurity/thread/8ca5b361-6f54-49e7-bc9e-89d27765465a/

I haven’t tried yet, because in my opinion it can be barely recognized.

EDIT: Seems to be only valid for XP systems, where the Defender was once delivered as an update.

That is correct as isn’t an integral part of XP (you have to install it or accept the update) as it is in win7 and why I specified win7 in my post.

Yep, I guess they wanted to move it more deeply into the “framework” for Windows 7, since it is started using the services host. I agree with you that they should make it more independent from Windows itself, tough I have to say that I once saw it coming in action, when avast! didn’t react. But on the other hand I have to admit that it only was once and a long time ago.

I avoided it like the plague in XP so you can imagine my disgust to find it installed in win7 with no way to completely remove it.

Yes I can understand that. Maybe we will find it one day removable again, I mean an entry within “Turn Windows features on or off” in the Programs and Features menu of the Control Panel would be a good solution already.

Since I use avast and MalwareBytes and Super Anti-Spyware along with Online Armor Free I have turned off windows firewall and disabled windows defender. As stated above windows defender is useless.

I just have recieved an advise from thech support to disable windows defender
right now

Which tech support ?

I never had problem with Windows Defender. I think im more tech support than them as i used this tactic and used on my pcs everytimes… No conflict at all. If you take advice of tech support on Avira then that their antivirus that is bad and is conflicting with it. If you take exemple on antivirus like avast! they say you arent forced to disable it.

If u say im a lier then go see the FAQ of ESET he is almost like avast! and say you arent forced to do disable it.

Here you got.

Mr.Agent

As of right now I disabled windows defender. My current protection is avast 6 free, windows firewall, and malwarebytes free and SUPERantispyware free as needed.
