ZoneAlarm and Avast work well together, I have been using this combo for years. ZA’s Privacy settings have issues with WebShield. I have ZA privacy settings 1)Cookie Control 2)Add Blocking 3) Mobile Code set to Off without a problem. It appears that with the privacy settings set to High in ZA problem occurs. Some have ZA privacy settings at Med without a problem. ZoneAlarm have been aware of this for a long time now with little effort to resolve the problems.
As mauserme has posted Comodo is a very good alternative.
I have Zone Alarm Pro. When I first installed Avast Pro (version 4.7), there was some message that popped up that mentioned some issue between ZA and Avast - like tednelly mentioned - and the message prompted to allow Avast to make some change in ZA, so I allowed it. I haven’t noticed any problems with having both ZA and Avast on my computer. Both seem to work fine. The only thing is that in ZA Pro, in the “antivirus monitoring” section, it simply says “There is no anti-virus running on your computer that Zone Alarm can detect. Make sure you are running anti-virus software.” The key point of that is simply that ZA Pro apparently simply can’t detect Avast.
I will say that even if there is some minor issue between ZA and Avast, the programs seem to otherwise get along better than ZA and Norton’s AV did when I used to have Norton’s AV. Norton’s logs had listings every day of “unauthorized access denied” (to ZA) and every so often ZA would pop up some alert about something Norton’s was trying to do. Until I got some settings adjusted, for a while I got the impression that Norton’s AV and ZA Pro may have been sort of “feuding” over certain files or drivers. Every so often I would see some of the same file/driver names mentioned in pop-ups that each program (ZA Pro and Norton’s AV) seemed to want to change every so often. It was irritating.
I noticed this thread and decided to post, because my Zone Alarm Pro expires in a few days. I was debating whether to stay with ZA Pro or try a different firewall. But unless I come across some glowing recommendation for another firewall that would be well compatible with Avast, I’ll probably just stick with ZA Pro. I prefer the paid version of ZA, because it has more features and allows more customization of the program.
I’m not familiar with Comodo. I’ve heard of Kerio, but got the impression there may be some issues between Kerio and Avast, but I’m not sure about that. Actually, I’m not that familiar with most firewalls, other than Zone Alarm. Anybody know of other firewalls to recommend that might be worth trying? I can’t really say I have any complaints about ZA. The Pro version includes anti-spyware that detected a few things that SpySweeper missed. Anyway, I’ve got 4 days to decide whether to keep ZA Pro or try something else.
Like others on the forum i have Comodo on one of my own computers and 5 or so for people I support. I also have Zone Alarm on a couple. They are both problem free for me.
