I downloaded avast! yesterday. Registered for the yearly free edition, ran a full scan, had no problems. Had to restart my computer this morning due to various programs updating. Now, avast will not turn on. Clicking the “start” button to turn it on or clicking the “resolve” button does nothing.

what antivirus did you use before installing avast?
did you uninstall it berfore installing avast?
did you use the vendors removal tool to Clear all leftover files that may conflict?

I used Microsoft Security Essentials. I had some problems trying to update it, so I after lots of trouble, I uninstalled it. Unfortunately, the issues were too much and kept running me around in circles. I used their removal tools and got lots of help from their online support staff, but the dead-end forced me elsewhere.
try avast repair
contolpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall > repair option …wait a minute and reboot
Thank you sir. All I had to do was re-open Avast after the repair and everything was on.
