is avast like avira that should be updated regularly?
or is it fixed, no updates needed?

avira has better detect BUT once avast 5.0 come out it will be far better than avira.
id would chose avast. im running 5.0 now. works great
also avira has update issues sometimes.

as of now, avast 5 is still in beta state. you may participating in the beta testing by downloading the avast 5 beta in the forums. Sorry, I forgot the link, but you may try using the search function with this phrase “avast 5 beta”.

Home edition is only 4.8.
The free antivirus of version 5 will be called avast! Free Antivirus.
There is no beta of the free version, just the paid (maybe it will be called Premium) one.

avast (like any other antivirus) needs to be updated regularly.
