Avast blocking Imgur and Twitter

I had to switch from Windows Defender because it began to take 30% of my CPU when nothing was running. Anyways, Avast will block both Imgur and Twitter from opening or displaying images. I don’t get warnings, they just fail to ever load. With Avast off they load fine. I haven’t changed any default settings from the free installation. I’m mainly running Firefox, but I tried this on Chrome and Edge and the same will happen. This may be other sites as well but these are the two I’ve noticed. I’m on Windows 10 and fully updated.

  • Which version of Avast Free…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

FYI, Twitter works for me. (If it was blocked the forum would be full of complaints. ;))

Avast: 18.5.2342
Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit Version:1803 Build:17134.165
I have some other adblock plugins, etc, but this only started when Avast was installed and enabled. I have no other main anti-virus programs.
I used Windows Defender.

Oh, and I figured this wasn’t a widespread issue as I did a ton of searching already and found no relief!

Disable them one at a time, might help to find the culprit.

It can’t be any of them though because this is also happening on Chrome and Edge which I don’t use regularly and have no plugins enabled on. Again, this only happens when Avast is enabled.

Well, I figured out it only blocks those sites if I am connected to my VPN service, IPVanish. Any help with fixing this?

Best to go to the source, IPVanish. Avast and us wouldn’t know their program as well as they do.

Avast is the one blocking the sites, not IPVanish. IPVanish is fine when Avast is disabled. Again, only Avast is causing this issue. Only now I know it is because of the way it is interacting with IPVanish. However, since Avast Free has no Firewall module and is giving me no notices or errors, I have no ideas as to what it thinks it is doing by blocking these sites. I think it has something to do with the handshake connection, the certificate verification is not passing. Like those particular sites believe I am in one location but due to my VPN I am not. But I am not sure how to align these things so that everything works together. This only sprang up now because Windows Defender must not have been using the same level of security.

I think I figured out how to fix it, so I’ll leave this here for posterity if anyone searches or is curious. I did more research and disabled the IPv6 protocol under my network settings. This is meant to solve TSL handshake problems with Avast and Firefox. I also turned off HTTPS scanning under Avast. I tried this before and it didn’t work so I don’t know if this is required. I’ll probably turn it back on and hope it doesn’t somehow manage to get worse.

But anyways Imgur and Twitter work now with Avast and VPN on at the same time. Phew!

OK, thanks for the feedback.
