I just got a new PC with Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013. I have a Verizon.net email address and I can’t get Outlook set up. The Microsoft technical support is telling me the problem is with Avast - has anyone else had this problem? Thanks
So you cant access mail account?
Any error messages?
yes, I can’t access email at all - when I enter all the settings and then click on “test account settings” I get:
“Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
Send test e-mail message: The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).”
Do you have any other security programs then avast installed?
What antivirus did you use before installing avast?
Is it removed?
Did your computer come with a preinstalled antivirus?
Is it removed?
I only have avast - the PC came with McAfee, which has been uninstalled
Have you run McAfee removal tool to clear all leftover files?
Removal tools here nr.#22a http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
Reboot computer … try mail again
I used a different uninstaller program to ensure all traces of McAfee were gone. (can’t remember what it was called)
Export avast certificate and import it in Outlook.
See if that is solving it.

You also may need to disable ssl in Outlook (depends on your mail povider)
Revo uninstaller ?.. you should use McAfee orginal tool MCPR.exe
If you turn off avast mail shield, does it work then?
You can find the uninstaller at:

yes, Revo uninstaller is what I used. I just tried adding the certificate, still no luck. I’ll try disabling SSL in Outlook. my email is Verizon (Verizon.net).
Ok - I tried all the suggestions, uninstalled McAfee using the MCPR.exe - tried temporarily turning off mail shield - tried disabling SSL - still no luck! UGH!
one of the reasons why i use webmail, never any problems
you are sure your mail settings, you get from verizone … are correct
i will check something…
Yep - absolutely positive the settings are exactly how Verizon posted… Thank You!
try avast repair…
controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall/change > repair option … wait a minute and reboot
Did you follow Eddy’s instructions ?

nope, didn’t work! Double Ugh!
Yep - that didn’t work either! I’ve tried all suggestions in this post…
i am out of ideas … :-\
use webmail https://webmail.verizon.com/signin/
you could uninstall avast and see if it works then? … to be sure it is avast causing it
If turning off the mail shield makes no difference, I highly doubt it’s avast!.
Totally removing avast! would certainly very that fact.
