I have the avast 4.8 home edition and since i downloaded and installed it, I noticed I can’t get windows media player or AIM to open. I looked through avast settings to see if I could figure out why, or if it’s avast doing it, but I’m at a loss. Anyone have suggestions?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
i am sometimes a bit computer illiterate so i’m not fully sure what you mean by AV but i think the answer is no…?
wait i deciphered what you mean. i had norton internet security before avast. when i got rid of it i went to add/remove programs and uninstalled it from there before installing avast.
OK, you got it right AV is anti-virus and Norton can be a real pig to remove completely and as a result can have an impact on on the next one you install.
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
you can Re-install Avast and see if it works. If it doesn’t then reinstall WMP again from add or remove programs. I hope you know how to do it, if not e-mail me
A reinstall of avast doesn’t remove the problem if it is one of conflict which I suspect. So it is best to confirm that all remnants of Norton have gone before doing any other actions/troubleshooting.
