I’ve been using Avast for about a year now and haven’t had any problems thus far. But today I tried opening a torrent file downloaded from a site I use a lot (again with no problems) only for Avast to block it. I temporarily activated passive mode and the file opened in utorrent just fine as always. Then, after switching passive mode off again, I tried opening a couple of torrent files I had downloaded and successfully used only a couple of days ago and now they’re being blocked as well.
Can anyone help me? BTW, I’m a bit of a dunce when it comes to computers.
EDIT: Okay, this seems weird. I just thought I’d try uninstalling and reinstalling utorrent, and Avast is now blocking me from uninstalling it.
I no longer have Avast installed but I’m wondering if a recent update has marked uTorrent as malware? uTorrent does have (or had) that reputation because it included OpenCandy during the install.
I should probably also mention that the pop-up window that appears when I try to open a torrent file or uninstall utorrent says the infection is “Win32:Evo-gen [Susp]”
Well, if it’s detecting something, it’s usually for a reason. Is the file EXE ? I’m assuming it is. If you’re suspecting it’s a false positive, double check it on VirusTotal.
If it’s of any help, FWIW, I use uTorrent 3.2.0.27708 (I know… ) and have just updated Avast to current. Channel BT seems not to be raising any problems at the moment. BUT, I only use the File Shield, although I assume that’s the bit actually catching your torrents and uTorrent.
However, I do remember some years ago, one torrent, an MP3, was thoroughly corrupted with instructions to open a porn site on the browser. Our AV at the time never saw it…
I have had the same problem today "when I try to open a torrent file or uninstall utorrent says the infection is “Win32:Evo-gen [Susp]” and stops Utorrent from opening… I know there is no infection, I set my Avast Pro to ignore UTorrent and all is well. Hopefully it gets fixed soon and I can go back to normal. Any update
thank god that im not the only one i was honestly thinking that for some reason the torrent.exe file was infected with something but was was weird is that after avast move the file to virus chest i scan it and it was clean so i was just wondering what the problem was at the end i just make avast ignore it it was too annoying hope i did the right thing
Go into the Virus chest, it can be found at the bottom of the SCAN page within Avast… Right click on the offending item and then click on “restore and add to exclusions.”
