I love Avast (normally) I recently updated my subscription as I am still using Windows Vista (32 bit) and wanted some protection online. However after activating Avast, I cannot view websites AT ALL. The computer connects to the internet as Windows can do it’s updates, but when I open, Chrome, Firefox or I.E. they cannot connect to the internet. I tried something - I switched off Avast and low and behold I can use all of my browsers! When I switch Avast back on, the connections go dead! This is actually not very helpful! Also Avast is blocking iTunes access to the internet. I have tried switching it of and on and it’s only when Avast is active that I cannot use web browsers or iTunes, and get this, Avast store itself cannot connect! Ha! What is the point of this antivirus? Please help me fix this as usually I love this product, what has happened? I have also tried just deactivating firewall etc, but that won’t allow web browsers access to the internet. I have checked that all the browsers are allowed access in the exceptions settings. I’m just glad that I dual boot (Linux mint) which is how I can actually write on this forum in safety!
Sorry for my rant. In short how do I get Browsers to work with Avast active? I would prefer to use Firefox.
In cases like this a common cause is something actually blocking avast, a firewall is high up the list of possible issues.
I use firefox as my browser of first resort and no problems with Firefox 45.0.2 and the latest version of avast free 2016 11.2.2261.
What avast version and firefox browser version are you using ?
When did this start to happen, e.g. when you first installed avast on this system, etc. ?
Did you have any other AV on this system before avast ?
What firewall do you have installed ?
Hi Eddy, Hi David R
Thanks for pointing me to correct part of forum and providing responses.
I will check the versions you ask about (currently using linux so have to shut down and re-start to get into Vista and see Avast).
I think it’s unlikely that something is blocking avast as when I right click the tray icon and disable Avast for 10 minutes I can happily use my browsers and iTunes can access the Internet. But when I reactivate Avast everything stops being able to access the Internet. I have tried turning various bits of Avast on and off to see what individual thing is causing this but haven’t yet been successful. I need to try this more systematically.
While Avast is enabled I can’t access the Internet via browser or iTunes but windows Vista update manager can download (albeit very slowly) updates.
I switched off Windows Vista firewall and I was only using the firewall that came with the most recent version of Avast Pro. I did also try activating windows firewall and disabling Avast firewall and also disabling both but this didn’t improve the situation.
The long story is I was weaning myself off windows so dual booted linux mint and windows vista. When my Avast AV came to the end last year I installed linux mint completely over everything as it’s ok to use linux without AV.
As I couldn’t get some windows software to work on wine I decided to dual boot vista again and have installed all but 3 of the the updates for vist (Net something. They keep failing). I downloaded and installed Avast and it automatically updated to the latest version (clean installation).
I paid for 1 pc one year on the pro version.
I can get online with Firefox and IE when Avast is disabled but this goes against the whole point of having antivirus!
I will re check this forum on Sunday. Thanks again.
Matt
No, that is not ok.
Although there is less malware targeting Linux, there sure is and they can cause a lot of problems.
Please perform the repair and if it doesn’t solve things the clean installation.
If that also doesn’t solve things follow these instructions > http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
The logs may tell us more about what is happening.
