avast can't repair virus from 1997? :/

My avast Enterprise Protection Suite v7 shows some xls files infected with MX97:Laroux-PD trojan but it can’t repair them. Really? :-\ This virus is from 1997 and free MS Security Essentials tool can take care of it but paid avast can not. I submited an example from the virus chest with my email and comments to avast few days ago but no reply. Is there any other way to inquire about this issue?

did you select repair…Most of the viruses whether old or new cannot be repaired by most AV’s…You need to choose move to chest option. ;D

So even MS must have deleted or quarantined them…not repaired them.

I choose repair and it says “Error occurred during file repair: the file was not repaired”. I have another computer with MS Security Essentials and if I move these files there MS fixes them just fine.

You can contact the virus lab: virus[at]avast.com

MSE must havent repaired the files but must have moved the 3 files to quarantine or deleted them…

As I said,Most the viruses whether old or new cannot be repaired…select move to chest option with avast and it will be fine!!

I can tell the difference between repaired file and deleted one :-\ MSE did repair the file.

What’s repair for MSE? Why would you want to repair a trojan? All the file is a virus.

Are you guys playing with me or something? :-
Laroux is an old trojan that infects xls files by inserting a macro. Harmless but replicates like a rabbit and if I try to email such a file to somebody it gets rejected by the antivirus. So what MSE does is removes that macro and keep the xls file. avast fails to do that. It sucks! >:(

To get this resolved, it might be a good idea to contact avast at the link Asyn gave you. At least that way, you will get somewhere and know one way or another that the issue is resolved or not.

Could help avast update the repair issue for this trojan.

It might also be a good idea to link this post to your request if you wish.

I did send an email to that address. We’ll see, I didn’t get any reply from the submission that I did from the virus chest :frowning:

Good job there. Now we wait for an answer.

what is an average response time for this kind of requests?

It’s weekend.

its possible that because xls is not exactly an open format and that MSE can fix it because it is their own product and other AV products cant because they cant write back the clean file contents to xls format.

bump. no reply from avast yet :frowning:
there is a possibility that they just can’t fix this virus because of the prop. format but explanatory email from avast would be nice >:(

Don’t get mad. I’ve contacted someone who, at their discretion, may be able to help you, or find someone who can.

thanks
