avast causes start up repair with windows 7 pro

Hi Avast,

I hope someone can give me an answer to this. I am a Avast fan since I got my own first pc, if not mistaken its more than 7 years. I recently installed Avast on a Windows 7 Pro machine that has been fully updated, after the Avast installation the PC didnt boot up. As soon as Windows 7 screen was loading it took me to the start up repair screen every time and would not boot into Windows. Did anybody else have this problem before?

Please find more info on this below:

Version: 4.8 Home Edition
Notebook Specs: HP Compaq nx 7300 Intel Core 2 CPU 1.83 Ghz 2Gb RAM 320GB HDD

Hope to hear from you guys soon

Which version of avast were you trying to install and was it an install over the 4.8 you have on your hp compaq, also which firewall are you using?

I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 (you can remove 5, boot, remove leftovers of version 4.8 also). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

it was a fresh install of 4.8. i prefer using this version for some reason  would it be better to upgrade to the latest version?

Which one?

Sure, version 4.8 will stop being supported (updated) in next weeks/months.

stevoza, which reason to use avast 4.8? i.e., why do you use it instead of version 5?
