Ive used avast for 15 years now on windows XP and windows 7 with no problems at all. However I just got a brand new laptop for Christmas that has windows 10 home edition version 1703, OS Build 15063.786 and if I install the latest version of avast, it causes my laptop to freeze and not able to even move the cursor. This is brand new. This lap top isn’t older. I have to kill the power on laptop and turn back on again and hurry like hell to uninstall avast before it freezes again and then my laptop is fine after that. Avast is the only thing I have tried to install on here so far, so another program is not to blame. What should I do?
Most new computers come with a trial version of an AV. Before you install Avast you first need to totally remove that other AV.
Follow the link in my signature to Successfully install Avast
That’s not the case here The only thing it currently has is that lame windows defender
It’s not only W10 Home that is affected, I run W10 Pro/Enterprise on a tablet and when Avast updated it made the tablet unbootable - I had to rebuild W10 from scratch and reinstall all my programs - except Avast!!!
Avast used to be a solid reliable AV solution (which I’ve used for several years) but the recent updates have been a disaster IMHO.
I wonder if your hardware is even supported ???
Well after almost a week with no official help what-so-ever from the avast team, and the lack of a way to submit a problem ticket thru my avast account, I guess they just don’t give a crap and honestly I don’t think avast is even compatable with windows 10. The only assistance Ive received was from avast’s facebook page via PM but the only advice I got was to make sure I had the latest windows updates and uninstall and reinstall avast which doesnt do crap.
My pc is brand new and was only built this last sept. It didn’t come with any other antivirus, trial or otherwise to interfere, so Avast simply isn’t compatable with windows 10 home version, or at least not mine.
I guess I’m going to have to look elsewhere for an antivirus program. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a free version?
It works on my Windows 10 Home addition. The question is what else is running on your system that causes the problem? Support: Submitting a support file using the Avast Support Tool https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB33#artTitle
Only what the factory put on it, minus some games I uninstalled that I’de never play. I did however install AdblockPlus browser extension that Ive used for years, but this freezing problem occured before it was even added so it not to blame.
There’s no other anti virus on it other than the built in Windows Defender
@ martok2112, Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed

If Repair doesn’t fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

Well I almost thought those links you gave me was gonna do the trick, but in the end it was still a fail.
Previously I had been going to the main avast.com page and downloading the free version there. The file was labeled something like
“cnet2 online installer”.
With that version installed, I was never able to get the “avast clear” uninstall file to work - it always gave me an error panel and I had to uninstall via add/remove programs.
Never once with the main page’s download link did avast ever trigger windows defender to realize another antivirus was installed - so I was literally trying to run both at the same time.
With the links in your last post, today I used the free version install file named “avast offline installer”, and this time it DID finally trigger windows defender to deactivate and recognize avast was installed. So the download link on avast.com’s main page is corrupt somehow - no matter what.
However even doing it with the links you posted last, my laptop will run for about a minute and then everything will STILL freeze up and I have no choice but to kill the power and improperly shut pc down.
The repair option has never helped no matter which install file I used.
At this point I literally don’t know what to do. I’ve tried a half dozen times to get avast to work and it just wont.
The only idea I have is to abandon avast after 15 years of using it and switch to another antivirus. Maybe AVG?I knew they used to be good back in the day, but not sure who the best one is these days that is free.
Im open to suggestions here
Well it worked until the latest editions of W10 and Avast 8)
