Here’s the thing… I updated Avast to the newest version some time after it got out… Soon after that i tried installing Ashampoo Burnign Sturio 11, but Windows XP said that there were not enough resources, and the entire system started collapsing until even the shutdown.exe stopped working… I restarted, and everything was fine, but that kept happening quite often. I reinstalled my system to try and fix it. First programs that i install are my sound card drivers, graphic drivers, avast and opera… Next comes Net Framework 2 because its required by ATI, so i download it, and start installing it, and the same thing that happened when installing Ashampoo Burning Studio happens again. I installed my system again, did everything the same, the same thing happened. Then again, but something else (i can’t remember what gave me that error…). Then i installed Windows 7 to see if something is wrong with my hardware, and everything was ok, but becouse i have just 1 GB of ram, i had to go back to XP. I started ruling out the apps that cause this, and after 2 more XP reainstallings, and restoring 2 backups of a freshly installed XP, i figured out that the problem is caused by Avast… Can anyone tell me what the problem is here, and will it be fixed? Xp i was installing was SP3, and Windows 7 was SP1.
Sorry for the long post, and for my bad English.
This is just another post about the memory leak bug. See this post: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=iqqkg1kfjpnn8pjbtejck4h3q0&topic=100359.45
The new version of Avast is buggy and don’t work on Win XP. Uninstall and install the previous version.
Can’t do that. The previous version immediately wants to connect to the Internet for the latest version. Disconnecting doesn’t do any good; nor does working in Safe Mode.
Avast has completely trashed something I’ve been relying on and endorsing for over seven years.
I don’t see how they missed something this big! They screwed everything up…
I spent 2 days trying to figure out why my system is not working like it should…
I think I have the same problem as you are. This last week I am still having problems with my XP. It won’t install QuickTime 7, and I thought I had virus problem, but I think reading from this forum, I know now where the problem lies.
Borris. You must do a complete uninstall, including using the Avast uninstall tool. Otherwise you will get the mentioned problems…

Luckily we know to come on here and find info on clean removal, downgrading, etc., but I’m sure there are a ton of less computer savvy people out there who think their computer is infected or that their hardware is fried as a result of these serious bugs. Really need to get that fix released…
Thanks. I did that long before looking to see if anyone else’s PC had gone completely sideways after this upgrade.
