Avast! causing "Black Screen with working mouse pointer" in Windows 8 Pro 32 Bit

Hi all ,
I have upgraded my PC from Windows XP Professional service pack 3 to Windows 8 Pro 32 bit . I have installed " avast! free antivirus 7.0.1474 " and also updated its virus definitions . When I restarted the PC , avast! stops Windows 8 from booting . After the user login page , a " Black Screen with working mouse pointer " appears . Nothing appears more than this . Uninstalling avast! in safe mode and restarting again boots up Windows 8 in normal mode without any problem . I have been using for more than 2 years and never had a problem with avast! . Now avast! is troubling me . Does any one of you have a fix for this problem so that avast! can be used without any problem in windows 8 ??
Please help me out .
Thank you .

  • Other security related software installed…??
  • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Avast since 2 years . No I am not using any other Antivirus

Did you disable Windows Defender (MSE)…??

Yeah I have disabled Windows Defender and its services and tried installing avast . But same thing happens . :frowning:

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I have tried the above reply but it happened again … Uninstalled avast! in safe mode and rebooted PC

Try to install without Network-Shield and Behaviour-Shield.
Does it work…??

Yeah trying without Behaviour Shield helped me . Thank you . So , is Behaviour shield causing the trouble in Windows 8 ??

  1. You’re welcome.
  2. It seems on your system it does. Are you sure that no other security related software is installed…??

Yeah I have even disabled Windows Defender . Is there a way to find out if there is any other software installed on my pc ??

  1. Well, you’ve to disable it under W8, as it’s a full AV now.
  2. You could post an OTL log. (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0)

I didn’t get you . What should I do in knowing about if other AV are installed . Could you please elaborate ??

Post an OTL log. Follow my link for instructions how to do that.

Here is the OTL log of my PC

After a brief look (have to go soon) I didn’t find anything, I’ll have a closer look later in the day.

Thank you . Hope this would be solved soon .

Until the next version update, just keep the BS disabled.

so my PC is ok ??!!

FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN’T ACCESS TASK MANAGER(Crash) or SAFE MODE, I HAVE FOUND ANOTHER METHOD…

After login, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del then, click on the Power button. It’ll show some error, click OK.
Then, there will be an Error Report. Click on More Details, Scroll down & click on the last Hyperlink (Blue, underlined test). This will open text report in Wordpad.
Click File → Open. Select All Documents from the dropdown menu at the right-bottom of the window.
Browse to “C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast” & look for AvastUI, Right-click on it & Run as Administrator…
Now you can add the explorer.exe & SystemSettings.exe to Behavioral Shield exceptions as mentioned everywhere… Restart…
Enjoy!!
