Avast! Causing Momentary Freezes on Certain Sites

Hello,

Recently I’ve noticed that when I’ve gone to certain sites the computer has frozen for nearly half a minute. The sites in question are retail sites with flash content. It only happens once and if I go back to the site it is fine, unless the computer is rebooted then the problem begins again.

Now before bob tells me it isn’t anything to do with Avast!, I have discovered that switching Avast! protection off before I open the site solves the problem, furthermore, I do not have this problem on Android or Ubuntu.

So I’m pretty certain this is being caused by Avast! anti virus.

Is anyone else suffering from the same problem and does anyone know a fix or workaround other than turning off Avast! protection?

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Oh yeah, sorry:

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)

Free Version

  • Which version…?

11.2.2262

  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)

Windows 7 Home Premium x64

  • Other security related software installed…?

SUPERAntiSpyware Free (on demand), SpywareBlaster

  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

I’ve used several, all of them were totally un-installed using their own recommended un-instalation tools. The problem roughly coincided with the recent Avast! upgrade, so I’m guessing this is no coincidence. Although it took me a while to realise Avast! was the culprit.

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15
It brings a new implementation of Web Shield.

I don’t have Web Shield activated anyway. Also, by their very nature, beta releases aren’t usually too stable. I’m pretty sure this is some flash related conflict or problem.

Apart from the freezing Avast! seems fine. As it only freezes once after boot up I suppose I can live with it.

I can’t see how avast is “Causing Momentary Freezes on Certain Sites” if as you say, you have the web shield disabled. That is the only shield that has direct interaction with sites you visit.

Given your comment “The sites in question are retail sites with flash content.” I just wonder if this isn’t related to any SafeZone Browser check that would check if the SZ browser should be used on these retail sites. Do you have the SafeZone Browser installed ?

Another thing to look at do you have the Avast On-line Security add-on installed on your browser ?
That checks against known phishing sites, etc. Something else to check. Do you have the SafePrice browser Add-on @
That may well be checking retail sites you visit for other options to suggest…

And yet, oddly, it is causing them. I’m pretty sure that this is the case because when I disable Avast! it doesn’t happen.

It happens in every browser I have, including SafeZone Browser. Admittedly I’m only guessing it is a flash problem, but the sites in question all have active flash animated homepages. Also, this only started after the recent Avast! update, before, there were no problems.

I don’t have any of these plug-ins/add-ons and I have a customised very minimal install of Avast!.

I’m at a loss as to what it might be, given you have a supposedly minimal installation.

Sounds like there is some sort of conflict going on, like all conflicts, remove one party and no conflict, but it doesn’t identify what is responsible for the conflict.

Strange I don’t see this on this XP Pro system nor my win7 32bit Acer netbook and that only has 2GB and an Intel Atom N255 (1.5GHz dual core) CPU and that can barely pull the skin of a rice pudding.

I keep flash player up to date as some sites still have flash player, even when HTML5 can deal with type of content. I see there is a new flash player update - see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=9671.msg1319017#msg1319017.

Post the sites here.

I’ve solved the problem. I’ve uninstalled Avast.
