AVAST checks for update on re-boot before my aDSL connects

When I re-boot I always get an error message like the one below:

Information about current update:
Last encountered error:
Cannot connect to download3.avast.com (unknown:80).
Total time: 58 s
because AVAST tries to do an update before my aDSL has a chance to connect to the internet.

Any way to slow down loading of AVAST or have it pause 2 minutes before doing an update?

Not a big deal to cancel the error message, then do an update manually, but if I can avoid doing things this way, I’d prefer to. I’d rather not turn off automatic update if possible.

First of all, WELCOME to avast! forums Alobar !!!

So, if I understood you well, you have to dial to connect to internet. I use ADSL myself, but I’m connected through my router/firewall, so I don’t have to dial, I’m connected 24/7, whenever I turn on my computer, immediately after logging into Windows, my network connection is ready for use.

Anyway, this screenshot in attachment shows my own settings. You should go under avast! settings / UPDATE (CONNECTIONS) section and in the right pane, uncheck both options first, confirm everything so avast! can remember those settings. Restart your system and see if that helps. If not, then go back to those options one more time and put a checkmark under first option I ONLY CONNECT TO THE INTERNET USING A DIAL-UP MODEM.

Under UPDATE (Basic) section leave everything on Automatic, Virus Database, as well as Program update…

Post back if your problem is solved…

Cheers !

You can add the value: AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds in the section [InetWD] of avast4.ini file. See ‘Settings’ on my signature for details.

Welcome to forums…

This simple solution worked like a charm! I was tired & saw the checkboxes as rodio buttons where I had to choose one or the other. My bad.

It took a while to get back to you because I was using Avast to scan my whole system & I did not want to boot in the middle. It took several days to check thru all the files I have. I am very happy that scanning all the files on disk is not needed daily or weekly once I have a clean system & check all incoming mail & new d/l files.

S.Z.Craftec’s solution worked fine. Thanks for your solution. It was nice knowing there was an alternative solution waiting if I needed it.

Nice forum with friendly people here. Thanks for both your welcomes.

Alobar, you are always welcome !

Now, when we found solution for your problem, don’t leave these wonderful forums. Stick around, ask for help if you have any other issues and of course, sometimes try to help other fresh avast! users who needs our help. Now you know how to solve this one, but after few months hanging around here, your knowledge database will grow, and you will be able to help others with many other things…

Cheers !

Oh! By all means on both counts! I do not yet know enough to even know what sort of questions to ask! But as I formulate questions, I shall be sure to ask. And I figure that the more help I receive, the more I owe to others. I like this forum & shall be sticking around here for the foreseeable future.

Hi,
will Avast ever auto update, if both methods of “update connections” are left “unchecked” ? If Avast continues to auto update with “update connections” unchecked, what time frame is used?

Thanks in advance,
bill

I think the autoupdate will be carried out even if any of the options (dial up and/or permanent connection) is checked.

avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.

The updates are incremental. This is the wiser method of updating I have ever seen in a antivirus

The program updates are released but to avoid excessive load on the servers the auto update check happens randomically every 7 days and it’s not checking every time you connect to the Internet as with the iAVS checks.

You can however, as you have found perform a manual update. Monitoring the forum ALWIL Software Announcements will give forum regulars a heads up on any announcements, like updates, etc. So forum users have another benefit.

Will Auto Update be carried out even if any of the options (dial up and/or permanent connection) is unchecked??

Thanks,
bill

I think you already got the answer… Yes, updates will work fine…

Well I wasn’t sure my question was understood correctly, but you did answer my question.
Thanks and regards,
