Avast counting wrong the number of signatures in database?

Hello guys,

Last week, I was browsing by the forms of Avast, just to know where is each settings/functions… I get in a place called virus database… So I searched with . just to see the names that avast gives to its detections… and see what virus/adwares it detects…On this same form, I saw that it listed to me a number bigger then 80.000 detections! Its something amazing… I thought…

But now, after 2 or 3 database updates, I did go to this same place to show a friend, its showing only 36.702 detections, using . too…So it can show all…

Is this counting wrong? Or Avast made a clean up in its signatures database…? What I am missing?

Thanks for your time,

Elminster

Hmmm… This looks more like a graphics bug… Look at the screenshot below. The count should be arround 36.000 but the 3 looks like an 8 although it isn’t an 8 exactly. Also look at the first line on top, it is out of place.
PS: This screenshot is from a windows 2000 pc with no themes patched!

I would really like to know what causes these redraw problems. I have already seen a few screenshots like this, but I really cannot understand what might cause it. As far as I know, there is nothing special about the used controls, yet they are not redrawn correctly (see the “Filter for virus search” text - it’s overlapped by the group line - that certainly shouldn’t happen). If anybody happens to find out what might cause this, I’d really like to hear that.

Thinking about it… it is possible that all the problems I have seen occurred on non-English windows (Japanese, Finnish)… what OS do you have, Spyros?

No problems here, using english version, would the skin selection have anything to do with the display of fonts, etc? Although it doesn’t look like Spyros is using any skin, so probably not.

Igor, as I wrote in my first post, this screenshot is from Windows 2000 professional.
I have another one running XP Professional, but I won’t be able to check that one to for another 3-4 hours. I’ll post back as soon as I check that one too.

I understood that, I mean the language version.

I don’t know guys… I just tested all those skins in skin section (Martin’s, RejZor’s, Darren’s as well as mine), and everything seems OK in here… it must be something else. Also, I’ve noticed those diagonal lines on screenshot my friend Spyros attached… what is that ? I’ve never seen them before…

I really have no clue what could be causing that line to overlap those words in “Filter for Virus Search” text, but it looks to me that it happens on older versions on Windows only… I may be wrong though…

Whoops! ;D Sorry for the misunderstanding ;D The OS is the Greek version.

Sasha, you’re right; those diagonal lines appear only in 2000 and not in XP.

I don’t think it has anything to do with skins… I believe it appears in Enhanced User Interface as well. Mystery…

You get those diagonal lines ifyou compress screenshot in GIF with 256 optimised colors.

The diagonal lines do not appear on EUI (see screenshot below)

RejZoR, the lines in my screenshot have nothing to do with picture quality (100% jpeg). This is exactly how it appears on my screen.

This is 256 color optimised gif and I don’t see anything like those diagonal lines RejZor… ???

The screenshot doesn’t really show the dialog
Can you please try to find other occurrences (of the group line crossing the text) in the program? I have seen it in the settings of logging sensitivity, for example. Does it appear only in Simple User Interface with skins, or Simple User Interface without skins… or even Enhanced User Interface?
Thanks.

It must be that Windows 2000 have some strange behaviour when it comes to “reading” visual theme… doesn’t matter which one is applied… something is strange about that thing…

Also, I’ve noticed this…

As we all can see, that line is NOT overlapping those words… line is under those words… so it looks like text has transparent background on Windows 2000 (for whatever reason). On Windows XP, there is coloured background (same color as that particular Window color)

Spyros - what’s the color quality value in your Desktop Properties under Settings tab ? Of course, I mean on Windows 2000 system…

OK, here we go…
Diagonal lines show up on some (not all) windows especially in the settings.
You are right about logging + I found another one. SUI or EUI doesn’t seem to make a difference. Here are some screenshots.

One…

Two…

Three…

Natural colors (32 bit) → If translated correctly from Greek
