Avast CPU Consumption

Hey Guys!!
After the recent updates, my AVAST has gone completely haywire. It is constantly showing CPU consumption in the range of 60 - 80%. Occasionally this falls to 30% and then shoots back to abnormal levels. Did a reboot and an AVAST reinstall but no luck so far. Pls see the screen shot that I am attaching.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Bob. Did everything you said. Things worked well for a couple of days. But Avast is back to consuming huge CPU resources once again. I am worried it has something to do with the new update which could possibly be broken.

I’m using Avast Omni and can’t duplicate your problem.
Maybe someone else can shed a light on other things for you to try.

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Hi Asyn
I am on Avast Premium Security (previously Avast Internet Security) 19.8.2393 (build 19.8.4793.541). My machine in a Win10 64 bit device and I have always been on Avast. Never had this problem before. I have my defender and windows firewall turned off. All my Avast shields are active.
Need some urgent help as Avast CPU usage is shooting up towards the 90% mark.
Thanks in advance.

  1. Download Avast Premium Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premium_security_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

The user has already done a clean install.

Thanks Bob for pointing that out.

It is also interesting to note that the CPU consumption is remaining very high even when I am turning off all my shields. Ii is almost as if Avast is performing some heavy duty scanning all the time.

Left with no other option, went ahead and did another clean install. As you can see in the screenshot attached, everything looks fine at least as of now. Keeping my fingers crossed.

OK, sounds good.
