Hello,
My PC has been randomly rebooting. I discovered that Avast was no longer completely installed. I reinstalled it, but it won’t complete a Smart Scan. A Windows screen says there’s an error and the PC will reboot within a minute. In Event Viewer, there’s a corresponding Event 1074 under System: The process wininit.exe has initiated restart of computer. The system process C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 1073740791. The system will now shut down and restart.
I’ve tried a repair install and a complete uninstall/reinstall. I also booted into Safe Mode and did a selective reboot with the 2 Avast services on. Avast wouldn’t load properly. What can I do to get back to normal operation?
Thanks!
Do you have paid or free version of Avast AV?
Did you use the avastclear.exe program to fully uninstall avast before re-installing?
I have the free version.
I didn’t know about avastclear, so I just tried that. After using it to fully uninstall avast, rebooting, and reinstalling, the problem persists. When I first open avast, it immediately gives the error mentioned above. It reboots within a minute. Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Do you have another Antivirus or Antimalware program installed that could interfere with Avast? (not including Windows Defender).
From my websearch, found this (ignore ads to download software) re lsass.exe: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/lsass-exe-terminated-error-and-high-cpu-usage
They suggest:
Do full malware/virus scan, as you do not have Avast working try an online scanner, there are several out there.
Also do sfc/ scannow from command line.
I don’t have any other antivirus or antimalware program besides Windows Defender.
I did sfc /scannow and it didn’t find any problems.
I used f-secure for an online virus/malware scanner. It downloaded an exe, but it ran without installing anything. It didn’t find any issues.
Looking at the article, I don’t see high CPU or disk usage.
I guess there are no other options?
I have just re-read your OP.
Does the PC reboot ONLY if you attempt a Smart Scan, or does it happen all the time whilst you have Avast AV installed?
Just trying to determine if specific to Smart Scan or a general problem.
It might be a general problem. It’s attached to a TV via HDMI cable. I’ve noticed when I turn off the TV at the end of the evening, the next day, the laptop is actually powered off. I don’t have any setting set for the laptop to do that such as when I close the lid either plugged in or on battery. If the TV stays on all night, the laptop doesn’t power off. It was once I started looking into it that I saw the issue with Avast and in Event Viewer.
Hello lindatkd,
Did you finally find any solution to this? I have the same problem when I do a Smart Scan and when I connect to an external monitor via HDMI.
Thanks
