Avast def updates - wow!

Good grief, came online this morning to find we’re up to 0522-11 already. That’s 12 (so far) this week, and it’s only Friday morning here. That’s gotta be a new record since I started using avast-32 way back when.

Does this mean we’ve entered a state of cyber-war emergency now? And if things don’t settle down, does that mean “all leaves are cancelled” for the Alwil team over the weekend??

Admittedly, in the past when we’ve had a flood of new defs practically back-to-back, at least some of them were to correct FP’s that appeared in the rush to get fresh protection out. And I imagine at least a few of the current crop are the same. But it sure sounds like something’s hit the internet, huh?

Thanks to the team, and best,
Mike

Yep, something strange is going on on the NET this week. ;D Some kind of epidemy of starting summer. PS. I’m using avast since v.4.0.525 if i remember correctly. It was some breaks during this period, but avast know is the main protection key and i’m happy to use it.

Correction. My avast had just updated to VPS 522-12. Again new mytob variant! :o

alwil was very busy this week…

I don’t know where the number will stop 0522-??

It is a strange week for updates.

Pardon my ignorance, but what’s a Drp? Don’t remember seeing one of those before. Thanks.

I don’t know if it’s the same DRP, but DRP stand for Disaster Recovery Plan. This plan is mostly for buisness when a event occurd that destroys all files and equipments.

drp - I believe would be a Trojan “Dropper”. More or less a trojan that when run extracts more trojans from within its own file - and runs them as well :o

Like I said, it might not be the DRP I said above but at least you learn something about business. ;D

Thanks, toadbee – I’d heard of droppers before, but assumed they just got lumped in with Trojans. And of course up here in Cana-duhhhh (plus I’m personally slow) I never thought to associate Drp’s with droppers. :-[

You’re welcome. And hey, we’re all in this mess called the internet together

Also, i could be wrong (happens all the time), but i think the Avast boys would have straightened me out by now ;D

Wow … 0522-13 … it seemed like a lot of updates this week, but I didn’t realise there were this many until I read this.

The longer I use !avast (about a year, now) the more impressed I am by Alwil. They really seem to work unusually hard improving avast and providing updates as soon as possible. At this point, I simply can’t imagine switching to another a-v.

I feel exactly the same!

Its “avast!” and not “!avast” :stuck_out_tongue:

Malware tagging extensions meaning:
[Adw] → Adware
[Wrm] → Worm
[Trj] → Trojan
[Drp] → Dropper
[Kit] → Malware Construction Kit
[Vir] → Virus (haven’t seen this one yet,but i belive it does exist)
[Joke] → Joke program

So it is … where did I get the idea it was the other way round? ??? :-[ Must have been in an alternate universe or something.

Anyway, “A rose by any other name …” and !tsava smells as sweet. (With my luck, “tsava” is probably a naughty word in another language; if so, apologies in advance – but I did do a search and found that Tsava is, among other things, the name of a lion.)

14…

I’m almost sure, that we’ll have ****-15 this week!

Wouldn’t surprise me at all – it’s still well over a day and a half till the new week starts “over there”.

Yesterday’s Trend newsletter said that there’s a heck of a lot of new virus activity this year compared to last year – although they did say that last year was unusually quiet. I’m just mildly surprised that it all seems to be hitting in one week – students free for the summer with extra spare time, maybe?

Well it seems to have ended with 0522-16

The new week just started! ;D

Mine is at 0523-0 ;D
