avast detects a virus in the operating system

a few minutes after startup, this popup appears:

Suspicious File Found!

A suspicious file has been detected (using heuristic method). This may be a sign of malware infection. Please allow the file to be submitted to our virus lab for analysis.

File name: C:\Program Files\adobe.exe
Type: Rootkit: hidden process

i chose to ignore it. but then this notice appears: “avast! has detected a virus in the operating memory.”

i can’t access most of my folders and files. please help.

Hi bleep

If you can open Task Manager – click Start, go to Run and type in (without quotations) ‘taskmger.exe’
Go to the Processes tab and see if there is an entry for adobe.exe
If there is, then select the process and use the button End Process at lower right-hand of box to end the process.

This may give you time to clean up your computer using conventional antivirus / antispyware tools. The forum provides very good info on many of these tools, a series of searches of the posts will help you with your problem. And further help from other members should be forthcoming.

I don’t know much about this particular virus, so I will be watching with interest.

You could try the following link for some background info, if you haven’t already been there.

Edit - if using Vista then type ‘taskmger.exe’ into search box at bottom left hand corner of screen.

thanks for the reply. there’s no adobe.exe there.

my computer has gotten a lot slower since. avast! already scanned the system in boot phase but found no threats.
