I have always been a big time fan of Avast…but now, I’m beginning to re-think this position.
I had decided (yesterday) to upgrade to 6.0…despite the fact that everything was going along wonderfully (why can’t I leave well enough alone?!)
No virus per Avast…Or SAS, Malwaremalbytes…etc…
all is well. No reason to think otherwise.
Well, in upgrading I needed to reboot…and I had a boot scan scheduled. I tend to always plan ahead (I thought).
I went to bed with the boot scan going. But when i got up hours later and saw it was scanning all my drives I canceled it. Bad move on my part. It didn’t like being canceled.
Blue screen and some angst but I finally got myself back online. But unfortunately, I soon discovered that although I could send email…surf the internet, run all my virus programs etc…all my exe programs were disabled. Everything. Task-manager, Adobe, Office, control panel…everything.
OK…I uninstall Avast and do a system restore on safe mode. I come back and everything is spiffy again.
OK…fine.
But since I blamed myself for the entire debacle and felt a little unprotected without Avast…I downloaded and installed Avast again. I thought I had learned my lesson. But I guess not.
Without rebooting or anything…all my exe programs again became disabled after the install. And, no. They were not loaded into the sandbox or quarantined. They just stopped working.
When i went back to safe mode and picked last known good configuration it just happened to be with a disabled Avast. And at this point I have to agree.
I don’t know what’s going on with Avast…but it’s starting to seem like when the chemo starts killing the person quicker then the cancer.
It’s too bad. I loved the program.
The one thing of all your post concerns me and it is this.
I soon discovered that although I could send email...surf the internet, run all my virus programs etc..
What do you meant bay all your virus programs ?
Having two resident scanners installed is one too many and not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.
Also, if it “disabled all EXE files” then your would not even be able to boot. Please describe better what your issue is, incl. error messages, screenshots or whatever.
Hi, I can’t include any errors or screen shots because it’s now fixed …
I went to safe mode and last known good configuration and everything is back on track.
I would like Avast back…but I’m scared of 6.0
Yes, i realize that there could be a conflict with several spy-ware programs but most people do have several (in case one misses something). And it had been alright until the update.
I’m not slamming Avast…I just think there’s a bug.
Maybe it only happens on certain systems. I don’t know.
What I mean about what happened is that all program executable files…such as Publisher, Adobe, taskmanager (also) etc…were disabled and would not open…although Avast would open and scan and SAS would open and scan as well (it did not disable superantispyware). But nothing else that I tried.
Perhaps I should put every exe program I have on the exclusion list? ha!
I could also get online and surf anywhere. I could open and respond to email.I just couldn’t open any programs but Avast, SAS.
So, it’s odd, I know. But that’s what happened.
I like Avast…but somethings not right.
Well, as noted above, with this amount of information noone can tell what is the problem. What’s the “several spy-ware programs” exactly?
One other thought … particularly since you haven’t yet been able to find what your problem is, don’t get carried away with exclusions, especially exe’s and other executables. You’re begging for infection that way.
In all the years I’ve been running avast, I’ve only excluded a couple of folders which contain large numbers of audio and image files, simply to significantly cut down the time required for on-demand full scans. While it’s not 100 percent impossible for those kinds of files to become infected, it’s extremely improbable, so I’m willing to take that slight risk.
I was being facetious about putting Every program into exclusion on Avast.
But discounting me does not solve any problems that the current Avast may have.
In looking around I do see that others had issues with their computer after installing or updating to the new version of Avast.
I had no problems with the previous versions.
Simply put…Avast disabled all programs after installing…(from cnet )…no programs would open but for SAS (which had been on my exclusion list…thus, my meant to be sarcastic comment about the exclusion list).
As noted previously, even benign programs such as Microsoft office, adobe,
everything and anything would not open.
Although, again…I could go online. I could scan with SAS as well as Avast.
But I could not even open the task manager (Ctrl alt delete).
regedit.exe taskmanager exe…any program aside from the above mentioned would not open.
The first time I solved the issue by going into safe mode and removing Avast.
The second time, after reinstalling, I went into safe mode and went to last known good configuration.
That is what happened.
Do you guys actually read these before responding? I am not the only one.
The problem is pretty clear to me.
I may try going back into safe mode and removing all traces of Avast and reinstalling an older version (if I an find it)…but there’s no way on earth I’ll reinstall this current version.
I like Avast but you guys responding don’t serve Avast well by discounting issues presented by more than a few people.
Are you trying to tell me that having any other kind of spy ware program causes this? Or that previous avast versions in the registry may cause this? If so, then stay away from the update button, eh?
It sure didn’t do this before.
And if so, why was SAS one of the few things I could actually open and run after installing Avast?
Download and run OTS, post/attach the log here then Essexboy may see what the problem is
