Avast disables itself

Hi,

Several days ago avast did this weird thing of consuming 100% of my cpu for no reason. It happened every time so I decided to reinstall (clean reinstall: boot in safe mode, use avast uninstaller tool etc).

Since then it hasn’t happened again, but the protection goes down from time to time. Avast is up and running, some minutes later I look at the tray icon and there’s the X symbol that indicates that something’s wrong. I open the interface and avast says the protection is disabled. I click on “solve problems”, avast asks for admin privileges, I click yes, protection goes up… but in less than an hour it happens again.

I tried to reinstall again but it keeps happening. I’m obviously not running any other AV, and using window’s (8.1) firewall.

Any ideas?

P.S: I’m running the last version of avast free.

If you’ve done a clean install and it’s still happening it’s worth trying a threat scan with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

That would rule out infection.
