I have XP SP 3 OS, MS Office 2007 Pro. Dell Latitude 830, HD configured to NTFS. I have had Avast Free on this machine for 4 years- worked great. Also have Malwarebytes Pro for same amount of time. All has been well until last week when Avast performed a program update to a new version that required reboot. When I went to use MS Word for the first time since Avast update, suddenly I started recieveing denials to save file due to permission errors. Tried first to repair MS Office - no help. Shortly after started recieving errors on any write file changes to hard drive. Removed Avast and Malwarebytes, ran complete CHDSK and autofix. MS Word again allowed file saving and hard drive writting was fine. Reinstalled Malwarebytes, everything continued to work fine. Then I reinstalled Avast. After reboot, MS Word stopped saving files due to permission errors. Removed Avast again, everything back to normal after reboot. 24 hours later, again reinstalled Avast, rebooted, same MS Word file save problem. Once again uninstalled Avast, rebooted, MS Word is working fine.
So what am I missing here? What settings do I need to fix to allow Avast and MS Word 2007 to work together?
Well, I’m using MS Office 2007 and latest avast… They should play well together.
Some questions that maybe help (me and other users to help troubleshooting):
Is your MBAM free or paid?
Are you the only admin of this computer (or there is another admin account)?
Are you the only admin of this computer (or there is another admin account)? Yes, I am sole admin
Any firewall involved? No, other than Avast
Can you post a screenshot of the error message? I tried at the time, but could not save MS Word with screen shot. It said, “Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. (C:\xxx\filenamexxx.docx)”
Which version of Avast are you installing? What ever was the latest free version issued last week, and again every day this week. Keep in mind I have done a complete unistall three times and reinstalled from Avast site- so what every they publish is what I am attempting to use at that moment. Last install was last night close to midnight CDST.
What version of office 2007 are you using? The latest SP is SP3. As noted above Office Pro 2007, with SP3 plus what ever security and programs MS has published up through last week.
RKG, can you disable MBAM Pro for a while and test if you can manage the Word documents?
Something is weird in your computer… It shouldn’t be happening this way.
I’m having the same problem. As of yesterday, I cannot “Save” or “Save As” while using Word. Gives me a “Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error”. Also, Avast interfered with Google Chrome’s ability to download items. These issues have cost me many hours of work & frustration. However, all the problems were solved as soon as I removed / uninstalled Avast (free version). This sucks, because I’ve used Avast for awhile & really liked it. Plus, I’ve recommended it to people.
Please email if this problem is ever fixed & I’ll try it again.
Some specifics would have helped. I use MS Word constantly and have never had any problems either saving or using the save as function.
I also use chrome and haven’t run into a problem saving files.
Can you elaborate ??? Screen shots would also help resolve your problem or at least give us an idea where to start looking.
I too have had a problem with permission denied when saving Word document
I am on XP
Word 2010
AVAST 8.0.1483
No Firewall
I also use Automatic backup on word
Word files are sometimes saved OK but on other occassions only partially saved (even though message implies that they can’t be saved). Turning Avast off for an hour let all saves through OK. As soon as Avast came on again the very next save failed
I have left the exception settings on so that reads are not checked but writes are. I think this is reasonably secure as long as you don’t get a virus that alters already saved files.
I have tried the new release8.0.1486 and still get the same problem-Word files are locked outparticularly if Word Automatic backup is used.
I am still inclined to the view that this is a timing issue in that the release update a couple of releases ago introduced a greater demand and Avast can not complete its checks in time
Technical Support has recommended that I install the latest release 8.0.1488 which I have done and so far it seems to have solved the problem
I have removed the exclusions.
If problems remain I will report here.
I afraid that I misled myself in testing the Word problem under the latest release. instead of removing Read Exclusion I added Write Exclusion. Without exclusions problem is still there
I am experiencing the same issue with Avast Antivirus v8.0.148x, Windows XP SP3, and Word 2003 SP3. Like petrusknut, I have had to use File System Shield’s read+write exclusions as a temporary workaround for now.
