Avast Does Not Autostart

After rebooting, Avast does not automatically appear in the System Tray. I can go into the Program Folder for Avast and manually start it. How do I set it to autostart upon reboot?

Hi…

Did you just recently install avast? If so, did you use another AV program or upgrade from a previous version of avast?

Best Regards…

No, I’ve been using Avast exclusively for over 3 years. Last month I reformatted my drive and reinstalled Windows, and then installed a fresh download to Avast Free version. Last year I was using the Pro version.

It’s only been fairly recently that I’ve had this issue. Could it be related to installing Spybot S&D - even though I’ve used that with Avast before?

Hi…

Ok

Spybot should have no role to play in this. To my knowledge, there haven’t been any problems in this way between the two programs.

I would first try performing a repair installation and see if that helps, if you haven’t done this already. If you’re using Windows XP, just go to the Control Panel and then “Add/Remove Programs” and then avast.

If this doesn’t work, try uninstalling avast and reinstalling it from scratch. Use the uninstall utility here…

Let us know how it goes.

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

That doesn’t actually prove that avast didn’t auto start, just that the avast icon is missing, follow Tech’s instructions to try and recover it.

Spybot’s resident protection, Tea-Timer (if enabled) could well have a hand in this is as it can block new start-up entries. I would have though you would have got a notification about ashDisp.exe rather than simply disabling it.

To confirm avast is actually running - What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?
