Avast does not start when I boot up leaving me unprotected for awhile.

I am using Avast version 5.0.594 free version. When I reboot, Avast will come up but it will not start. I get a message that my system is not protected. Sometimes it will be one or two shields that are not running but this time it was 7 that were turned off. I have gone thru everything trying to figure out what to change to make it be fully active on startup. As it is now I have to click the fix it button but that doesn’t seem to work. It still takes several minutes for it to decide it’s going to work. Then all of a sudden everything just turns on.

Please help me to fix this so that it is active when I reboot.

Thanks!

I am using the same version (5.594) and it takes forever to completely start up.
I have asked about this in the forum and one person said that maybe my computer was sluggish or not powerful enough to get everything going… Hogwash… Quad core, plently of ram, super video, fast hard drives…
Seems it (AVAST) just sits there waiting to start when the processor is sitting there idle (99% idle) with nothing to do.
I watch everything in task manager at boot up and AVAST is the last to start up and then only after the CPU has been sitting idle for 2 to 3 minutes… I deleted everything in startup except essentials and avast and it di the same thing…so I just dont get it… I like AVAST but I makes me wait and wait and wait and wait… I have to wait until it is running before starting the browser or e-mail… Someone must have a solution or comment… maybe it is just the wya it works… if so…YIKES>>>I do not care for that…

Something that avast requires might not have been loaded and avast doesn’t start as it should.

  • You could try adjusting this setting. From the avastUI, click Settings, Troubleshooting section, check the ‘Load avast! services only after loading other system services’ and see if that makes a difference, see image.

Hi David.

I have that checked already. It still delays to start the program. I just rebooted again and all 7 shields were disabled after my system booted up. When I was able to open the Avast interface, two of them were still disabled. Finally after almost 3 minutes, everything is operating. Why is there not an option to start the program at startup or delay it after certain things are loaded?

I totally agree with Steve. I don’t like it one bit either. The previous version did not do this. It always started right up first and actually made me have to wait (because it would lag me a little) to be able to do anything because it was doing it’s scans to make sure everything was safe. It was a bit annoying sometimes that I had to wait but at least I knew things were OK. Now I’m left to wonder if they are.

Right now I prefer to go back to the previous version but I know you won’t support it. That leaves me no option but to find another Anti-Virus program to use.

Sign me… a totally disgruntled user of the newest version.

You have the option with some other programs to delay them at start up. What programs do you have on start up? Perhaps they are all competing with each other thus slowing things down for the Avast shields to start up.

According to Vlk (Avast), the upcoming release will speed up the shields on boot up and should help (see 4th post down) http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=61179.0.

But I would still investigate what programs you have enabled on start up to see if they are really needed or not.
