I was running Avast free (updated to latest version) on Google Nexus 5 running Android 6.0.1. I have just returned from a week long cruise to three European destinations. I have a ‘Three’ sim which has ‘Feel at Home’ so I can use my contract data. In the space of 1 week Avast consumed 634MB. Someone suggested that the shield function might be acting as a proxy and that the data might be being used by other applications. I’m not sure whether I even have this feature in the free version. I tried to disable Avast but it restarted itself. I finally uninstalled the app and the drain on my data immediately stopped even though my usage stayed about the same.
My partner has a phone running Android 4.4 and does not experience such problems.
Any ideas?
