Startup Error Messages:
“Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Avast! Web Scanner service to connect.”
“The Avast! Web Scanner service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.”
During Windows startup these two messages get repeated about a total of 12 times in Event Viewer. Later “Information” messages state the web scanner was started. These messages delay startup time. This is happening on my Dell 6000 notebook, but not my Dell Dimension 8200.
Can someone please provide a fix for this situation? Your help is greatly appreciated.
#1 so you have ‘never’ had another AV on this system, nothing came pre-installed as remnants are commonly the cause ?
#Q2 Windows Defender has a start-up guard, but this shouldn’t effect the web shield as it isn’t a startup item like the avast tray icon (ashDisp.exe) which is. AdAware personally I don’t believe this is worthy of hard disk space, but I don’t believe this it the cause.
#Q3 Is this the Pro version of zone alarm ?
#Q4. I really don’t know, the two systems may not be identical and a lot depends on the windows boot order.
No, there was no AV on my Dell 6000 notebook when I took delivery.
I did overlook a malware tool, MS Malware Removal Tool, which updates monthly and removes only malware that is on a MS list. I run this monthly, and this tool has never detected any malware on this pc.
The Zone Alarm is the Home version.
Hope this helps. Thank you very much for your assistance.
Well there is nothing there that should be remotely connected so it is a bit of a mystery.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.
If that doesn’t work try a clean reinstall, see below.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
I did the “Avast Repair” and the result was the error messages still appear during Windows XP startup. I wish I could give you a report that it was repaired. I appreciate your help very much!
The uninstall and re-install of Avast! completed without a glitch. The new installation has been registered. I also checked Event Viewer - System, and error messages that were received earlier are gone. In fact “Information” notes state the web scanner is in the running mode.
In your last post you mentioned a problem with syncing. I can only guess but this may have occurred during one of the updates. Do you have any parting tips?
Thank you so very much David for your expert assistance! I trust you’re having a great summer!
The sync bit I should have cut out as it wasn’t really applicable, what it is when windows security center says avast is out of date yet when you try to update avast it tells you everything is up to date.
Well great summers in the UK (weather wise) are rarer than hens teeth and the last couple of weeks hasn’t felt much like summer, plenty of rain and some welcome that ;D
