Received this multiple times recently, a while back rebooted and it went away, but now here to stay…
“You are unprotected” Avast background service is not running… however, when I check the services “Avast Antivirus” is running.
I restarted services, no change… tried the ‘Start Now’… no change… still stating ‘unprotected’…
Registration is up to date. Reboots to the same message. Repair did not help.
Running 12.3.2280 (Build 12.3.3154.23)
Thoughts?
- Make sure all remnants of a previous installed av are removed
- Perform a clean installation of the latest avast version
What operating system are you using ?
Other than what Eddy has mentioned.
This is commonly down to the Microsoft WMI database being corrupt and needs to be reset.
Ok i ran avastclear.exe in safe mode, rebooted, then re-installed… seems ok for the moment…

Windows 7 Pro 64 SP1
A clean reinstall usually resolves the problem as it forces the WMI to clear the details for avast and then compile them again.
Resetting the WMI is generally there is nothing else works.
