AVAST Files Not Scanned and Windows Boot Message - Need Guidance

Using Free AVAST 10.4.2233 Virus Def Version 151214-0
After each scan I receive a message that Some Files Could Not Be Scanned. Warnings:
C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs\1511190100000030.bin
(There are 16 of these, all similar)
Also says:
Error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (1392)

When booting the same Windows 7 Home computer, this happens: Upon bootup, a black screen is displayed, but it goes away as the boot process continues. It says something about Vol Label Gateway NTFS being unreadable and references that it’s checking the hard drive before proceeding. (Has been doing this for about 2 weeks).

Any thoughts? Do I need to do anything? Thought these might be related since the occurrence date was similar for the boot notice and the AVAST warnings.

You are using a old(er) version of avast.

How do I handle files that avast! can’t scan?

As for the NTFS message, I would run chkdsk

as well as the drive diagnostic tool from the manufacturer

Thanks for your suggestions! I’ll try these right away.
