Avast Firewall vs Comodo Firewall

From anyone who has used both, in your honest opinion, which is better between the Firewall in Avast IS and Comodo free firewall?

avast is a silent firewall, with very few (if any) user interaction. Fully integrated with avast! detection capabilities. Paid.
Comodo is almost a HIPS firewall. Free :slight_smile:

So, do i take it you are saying Avast free combined with Comodo Firewall, is as good as, if not better than Avast IS?

EDIT: Okay, stupid question seeing as you work on the Avast team. But, from what i know a HIPS Firewall is better than a silent one. Correct?

Well, you’ll see it. Integration antivirus & firewall is also a goal to take into account.

I’m currently running Avast IS. Would it cause any problems for me to turn off Avast Firewall, and install Comodo Firewall to see how it works? Then if i don’t like it just uninstall CFW and turn Avast Firewall back on?

When installing Comodo Firewall all other firewalls will be turned “off”.
You cannot run both avast firewall and CFW at the same time.
Just as you cannot run both avast firewall and Windows Firewall.

Personally I prefer CFW over avast firewall due to CFW has HIPS.
I use CFW v5.12 w/D+ and it runs quietly in the background.

Another good choice is Online Armor Firewall which also has HIPS.

Thanks, that’s very useful. I have heard some people say the latest version of Comodo FW has bloatware and makkes browsing slower. Have you found this to be true.

Comodo has become too tech, too many features. I tried 2 different versions of 6 and they never let my XP run so I have to keep v. 5.12; However like in everything in life is a question of how much you like it or get use to it.

I have run Comodo since version 2.4 and never had problems until version 6. May be it is my old workhorse, but to me the main feature a firewall has, beside checking integrity protocol package and control your connections, is to make your system invisible in the web, and either, avast! or Comodo, is good at it.

I am not talking about HIPS because avast! does not has it, but if you do not mind alerts, HIPS is an extra layer of security that is very welcome now a days.

Or you can buy a lifetime license of Outpost Pro and they work great side by side with Avast Free & Pro if you don’t want to buy AIS

Sorry, I went to bed before I could get back to this thread.
Like iroc9555 I found CFW v6.x.xxx has become bloatware.
That is the reason I switched back to CFW v5.12.
Another reason is that v6.x.xxx almost crashed my system. Not good.

Update. Tried Comodo, and to be honest i didn’t really like it. Installed version 5.12.

Layout looks boring, and i just didn’t want to bother with it so updated my Avast IS for another year. Good old Avast IS :slight_smile:

Oh well, it was worth a try.

When it comes to the GUI in a firewall it doesn’t matter to me.
I have mine to be “set it and forget it”. IOW I haven’t opened
the CFW GUI in ages. I let it run in the background.

To each their own. I hope you find a firewall you will like.

Already found it. I’m sticking with Avast’s Firewall.

That’s not true if you’re paying attention at the installation and leave out the geek buddy and Comodo Dragon, in case you don’t want to use both, and the DNS settings as well as the adware bundled within the installer.
I’ve Comodo firewall 6 running without any problems and I haven’t experienced any slow down.

If you're referring to the Comodo Cleaning Essentials (CCE): they are purely optional and need to be downloaded separately from the installation first. If you're referring to the geek buddy and/or Comodo Dragon: both can be uninstalled easily from the control panel or unticked during installation.
That is the reason I switched back to CFW v5.12.
I personally like the v6.X version better, since I'm used to it more than I was with the v5.X, however I can understand if others have problems with the settings or even worse problems. For example it took me some time to figure out how I can disable the "access memory" messages from the defense log and what's causing it. (The answer lies within a tricky self protection setting which is a pre-defined HIPS rule, so you have to edit it and set the trust-worthy program which you use for scanning your computer as an exception in the corresponding memory access between processes tab in the protection tab.)
