Avast found Walivun[Trj] in automatic email scan but not in manual scan

Hello everybody.
I got two emails today that contain Win32:Walivun[Trj]. Both were flagged by Avast. Before deleting them, out of curiosity, I ran a manual scan (thorough) on the folder that contains all the email folders, and Avast didn’t come up with anything. I looked in the “chest” and there was nothing there.
Why did Avast catch them when they came in, but not in a manual scan of the folder where they were?
Thanks.
I’m using AVast!4.8 Home on WinXPsp2.

Because when they are coming in, ‘they aren’t in the email folders’ but in the localhost proxy that avast scans them in before passing them to the inbox, etc. if they aren’t infected. If they are infected they will remain in limbo until you make your decision on the action to take.

Having deleted them (or even before) the email still won’t exist on your system and won’t be in the chest either, unless you sent it there as the action selected.

Jonn, you’re using Windows SP2 that has several security vunerablilities and Windows SP3 has been available for almost a year that has perfomance enhancements and several Critical Security Updates so in IE go to Tools then Windows Update then download and install all updates.

Go to Control Center then Security Center then set it to Automatic Updates (Recommended) or [u]at least/u] Notify me about updates but do not download nor install them.

Run Secunia Online Software Inspector to see what other applications have vulnerabilities:

I ran a thorough scan on a colleague’s computer and win32:walivun was found in multiple places. I “sent them to the chest” as recommended. Is there any way to remove anything residual from this? Does she have to worry about that?

Also, there were several cases of win32:adware-gen and win32:spyware-gen. Anything more to do to get rid of these?

Thanks,
Janet M

I suggest:

  1. Clean your temporary files.
  2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! instead.
  3. Use MBAM (or SUPERantispyware or even Spyware Terminator) to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete them.
  4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications. I suggest avast! antirootkit or Trend Micro RootkitBuster.
  5. Make a HijackThis log to post here or this analysis site. Or even submit the RunScanner log to to on-line analysis.
  6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
  7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
  8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

I found a similar problem with a boot-time avast scan. It came up with Win32:Walivun and Win32:Bredolab-k. I went through this to do list that was given by one of the Avast Evangelists:
[size=10pt][size=10pt][size=10pt]1. Clean your temporary files.
6. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.(I haven’t done this yet)
7. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster.
8. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector.

My question is: Is my system vulnerable because of the Service Pack updates I’ve been avoiding? I don’t have a legit copy of Windows–am I stupid to keep going on without a legit copy?
The only problem that I’m currently experiencing, after all of the scans I’ve done, is when opening Mozilla I sometimes get some strange pop ups. It attempts to load hxxp://www.k.com and then shows the “contents” of my C:/ drive in Mozilla.
Any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you for this service. Attached is a HijackThis log:

Not only are you more vulnerable by not keeping your OS up to date, but it also has nock on effects. Like you can’t update IE either without at least XP SP2.

You further compromise your system by running old and vulnerable software, Adobe reader 7.0 is way out of date and vulnerable.

I don’t know enough about SystemWorks, but it looks like it has an AV element, this can cause conflicts and further compromise your system.

I would also suggest a visit to this site, which scans your system for out of date programs that have patches to close vulnerabilities, http://secunia.com/software_inspector/.

So apart from any legal/moral stand point, yes it is crazy to continue with a non-legit copy of windows when you must be able to get a legit retail copy of XP at a reasonable price.
