Avast Free 2014 build 2014.9.0.2011 Page Cannot be Displayed,

Avast just auto updated to latest version 2014.9.0.2011

Since updating webpages in Internet Explorer come up saying “Page cannot be displayed” if you close and relaunch Internet Explorer the homepage will display close and relaunch again it does not display. So currently every other time it is launched it displays the page then it does not.

The same goes for web searches it will display and then it will not.

I have tried the following:
Uninstalling Avast
Rebooted into safe mode Ran AVSclear utility.
Rebooted
Reinstalled Avast
Same result same issue.

I have narrowed it down to the Webshield component if it is disabled Internet Explorer works fine. If it is enabled the “Page cannot be displayed” appears.

Also when Avast was first installed it was saying that the “content was not available at this time”
It also had difficulty updating the virus definitions saying it could not connect then it would connect then it would lose the connection and reconnect again

Apparently the webshield is not ready for prime time. If anyone knows how to fix this other then disabling it, or uninstalling and reinstalling Avast please let me know.

If anyone knows how to get the last version before the upgrade please let me know.

I can confirm this happens in both Internet Explorer 10 & 11 even in No Add On Mode. My other computer which has not updated to the latest version of Avast is not experiencing this issue.

And I believe this is where the problem lies… Avast needs to fire their QA engineers for not testing the new Webshield.

• Fully rewritten WebShield so that it now doesn’t work as a “transparent proxy” anymore, which should result in an overall improvement in stability and performance. It also allows to see and detect more threats

Yes, it is a known problem with AOS and has been discussed quite a lot on the forums. Disable AOS in the Manage Addons section of IE, you are still well protected with the Avast Web and File Shields.

What is AOS? helps to know what the acronym stands for.

Avast Online Security add-on/plugin

By the way your advice did not work as it is DISABLED and the problem still occurs. The only thing that fixes the issue is going into Avast and turning off the web shield completely.

Thank you got the acronym figured out… turning it off makes no difference though

This should fix it…

I don’t have a webshield.ini file at all

Try this folder…

Go to C:\programdata\avast software\avast,

It should be there…

You need to enable show hidden files and folders to go to the ProgramData folder… (assuming you are running Win 7)

Yeah I had a moment there…lol

Did what you said and it worked like a charm Thank You So much!

You’re welcome.

Greetings, I’m having a similar problem after updating Avast yesterday. When I try to open a webpage using Webshield, It takes me to the site, then screen freezes. I tried following your instructions; when I select webshield.ini, it takes me to webshield -notepad. when I add the suggested line; [General] user stream filter = 0, , prompts to save, when i try, i’ll get a pop up reading ; access denied.

You need to be logged in as the administrator.

While saving the changes an avast! self defence message should appear… if it doesn’t…

Temporilary disable self defence by avast UI > Settings > Troubleshooting > Self defence (relevant one)

Then apply the changes to the webshield.ini.

After that MAKE SURE that you ENABLE avast! self defence again…

Reboot.
