avast! Free 5.0.462 - System unsecured but 'FIX IT' button not working?

There is a notification in the program saying that my system ‘is not protected’, with an option of clicking on the ‘FIX IT’ button to solve the problem - however, this button does not work. Further down the page there is a notice saying ‘Urgent: avast! service stopped’ followed by ‘the avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system’ and an option to click the button ‘Start program’ - however this button does not work either.
I’ve checked my registration and it does not end until 01.03.2011.
Please tell me how to get my system protected again?
Thanks.

First update your avast to the latest build, which is 5.0.545…!

Did you use system restore?

I experienced the same thing a few weeks ago, with the latest avast! build on Seven 64 bits. I scanned for viruses with several other softs, but none of them found anything. Finally, repairing avast fixed the problem.

I found it strange that although all its services were shut down, avast didn’t look that worried ??? (only displaying a little red cross on the tray icon, that an average user wouldn’t even notice)

Hi pollard81

you will need to supply us with more information -
what is yr antivirus? - avast! Free, avast! Pro, or avast Internet Security

Do you have any other antivirus loaded as resident on yr system?
Or previously had any other? there may be remnants left that are interferring with running of yr avast.

What is yr operating system? Are you up to date with Microsoft updates?
How much ram are you running? what browser(s)? and so on, whatever you think might help.

Often some condition in the system running environment will impede he operation of avast.

I suggest an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install to fix your problems.

Please follow these instructions:

Save a copy of newest version of Avast.

Save the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility on your hard drive.

Disconnect from the Internet at this time.

Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs”.

Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.

Reboot twice.

Clean your computer up.

Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.

Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.

Register your Free copy or add the license key for Pro or AIS.

Reset your settings, if needed.

Run a scan (try a Full System Scan initially to check for malware).

Please let us know if you have any further questions or problems after completing the above.

just read this thread i too have had this problem, had to reinstall about 6 times throughout this year, am running windows 7. 8 gig ram, quad processor, no other anti virus programs. but i,m running avast pro edition, and yes i update all the time ;D

@ pollard81, Let us know if the uninstall/install resolved your problem.

@ n.h.s. , It sounds like you’ve had to do this process too many times, which leads me to think that something else is causing your problem.

What build of avast are you using? Was it a clean install or an upgrade?

Did you have any prior AV on your machine (even if it was a trial version AV), and if so how did you remove it?

Do you have any other resident software on your machine (firewall, etc.)?

Have you run any on-demand scanners like free Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM) http://www.malwarebytes.org/ to make sure you are malware-free? This is compatible with avast.
