avast Free and Privatefirewall

I am using Privatefirewall 7.0.23.4 on Windows 7 together with Avast Free 5.1.889 (since the WebShield works, later versions don’t allow my browsers to access web content).

They were working fine at first, but then one day I can’t access the other tabs expect for the “MAIN MENU” in Privatefirewall. When I try to select “APPLICATIONS”, “PROCESS MONITOR”, “FIREWALL LOG” and “PORT TRACKING” nothing happens to the right, except that the bars for the High-Low-Custom disappear. When I press “MAIN MENU” again the bars re-appears.

Is there something that Avast is falsely detecting/blocking in Privatefirewall, though I don’t know precisely what it can be?

I have been able to fix the issue by doing the following procedure:

  1. Uninstall Privatefirewall
  2. Disabled Avast
  3. Reboot system (Avast still disabled after re-boot)
  4. Re-install Privatefirewall
  5. Reboot system
  6. Enable Avast
  7. Reboot system

I am still curious about the root cause, since I would like to avoid the same problem.

Best Regards,
pher

Generally this is down to the firewall blocking avastSvc.exe (web shield), rather than the web shield blocking browsers (it isn’t a firewall).

Deleting the entry for it in your firewall and reconnecting to the Internet normally clears the apparent digital amnesia by your firewall.

So I would suggest that you get the latest version of avast, 6.0.1125 and see how you get on with that. If you have a problem we can try to help, but sticking to an older version, there is little benefit trying to track down a problem.
