Downloaded Avast Free Antivirus 17.9.2322 from filehorse.com but it does not function.
filehorse specs says for XP but maybe not?
Did uninstall which removed avast from the list but it is still installed but not functioning. How can I get it gone?
There is no avast icon to be found.
Downloaded AVGfree. It says “not protected” because avast is running but I see no signs of that.

Accessed uninstall tool in safe mode. Did not change settings. Clicked uninstall button. Nothing happened. Gave it ten minutes.

Avast appears to be gone. Avast uninstall wouldn’t restart in safe mode so I did it manually. The uninstall prog had to pulled out of “files search”. The first panel (Directory address?) was blank so I plugged in downloads/software, took a deep breath and punched uninstall fearing the worst. Went off smoothly and I can’t see anything else missing so far.
I’m afraid to download Avast again. I think it is not compatible with XP and I have a pile of coat hangers out in the garage I can play with.
Thanks.
The address you plugged isn’t a valid address. For your information, Avast certainly does work on Windows XP SP3. However, considering all the problems you’ve already had, maybe you should just leave well enough alone.
A file search shows Avast was never actually deleted but is still there lying in wait. Not interfering so sleeping dogs and all that.
I appreciate the help.
You’re welcome.
