Avast Free - breaks gmail and hotmail for me.

Hi,

I’ve set up a new PC.

I’ve installed Chrome, Steam (no games), Battlenet (no games), and one network management piece of software called GameFirst III from asus)
Everything worked fine. (By everything I mean my browsing experience including both gmail and hotmail)

In the past I’ve always used AVG, however after doing some reading I thought I’d try a new product… Avast

Then I installed Avast and the browser add on and things have gone to hell, I can’t open gmail or hotmail at all, the tab’s freeze while opening, I don’t get any obvious pop up error messages, suspecting some kind of network clash I tried disabling ‘gamefirst III’ but that had no effect. So I tried disabling Avast and my mail accounts both start working again and browsing seems to be fine.

What do I need to give you in the way of files, and how do I get them to solve this?

Webshield uninstalled solves it.

I’m using win 8.1 64-bit.

IS this a known issue, is there going to be a fix, or is there more troubleshooting to do now?

Could you confirm which part was removed was it webshield or Avast Online Security

Did I get the wrong component?

Yes as webshield is your first line of defence
You will need to reinstall that and remove Browser Protection

Well hotmail is working but Gmail does not load and if I hit the refresh button I get an ssl error.

As I do not use GMAIL I cannot be sure of this but …

Export the Avast e-mail certificate

Settings > Active protection > Mail shield settings > SSL Scanning > Export certificate

Save the certificate to your desktop
Then import the certificate into Firefox using the steps shown here http://www.ciphermail.com/help/import_pfx_gmail.html

Let me know if that works

It’s chrome not firefox I’m using…

However I’ve imported the certificate, and I no longer get the ssl error, but I’m still stuck at the loading bar for gmail. (IE: no further progress beyond not getting the ssl error, page refresh does nothing at all now)

I spoke too soon I’m still getting the SSL error :frowning:

I’ve got to get some sleep it’s 1:40am here and I’ve got to go to work.

I’ll catch up on this in the morning.

OK more information today.

One site I’ve attempted to browse freezes half loaded as shown in the screen shot,

I’d I’ve had to disable avast to use the reply button on in this forum :frowning:

Are you using the Avast Online Security addon. If so disable that and try again.

If you are not using it then :

Download Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

[]Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
[]Once complete reboot your system
[*]Reinstall Avast

OK I’ll look into it.

My water cooling pump in my PC has failed and until I replace it I can’t try this fix.
